Head of English / LOTE / Drama

Mr Leigh Morrisey

I have been teaching English for over 20 years in both the public and private sector. Over the years I have taken many debating teams to winning finals, published many articles in the press, had students of mine become published novelists, theatre agents and journalists. My passion is Shakespeare whom I studied extensively whilst completing my Honours degree but I am also quite a film buff and I do enjoy my light Summer reading by the pool or at the beach. I also enjoy making HSC videos for Edrolo during the holidays in order to extend my knowledge of the course and bring a deeper insight to the classroom.

When it comes to academic rigour, English is the most important and central subject for our students. It is a pleasure to work with students and staff as we develop a lifelong love of reading and writing that goes beyond the vital groundwork we do in literacy. Students have the opportunity to pursue a wide range of interests from the traditional novel, film, digital media and theatre in the English classroom. At Scots All Saints, we pursue excellence as our students move into their HSC with the majority studying the Advanced course and many students electing to study Extension 1 and 2 English. We also offer a wide range of co-curricular activities with a strong debating program, both within the school (house debating) and at the HICES level. We run and enter public speaking competitions and have an active and very strong Mock Trial team. Students can also access our writers’ club, be entertained and informed at the literature festival and attend many theatre excursions to make studying English something memorable whilst at school. Our international students work well in their EAL/D courses and are able to achieve a minimum standard proficiency in English thanks to our excellent staff.

Languages is also integral to our faculty and we have superb French and Japanese programs in the Junior and Middle School. With French language festivals, Japanese student school visits and the experience of a second language, we provide a complete and rounded education for each and every student.
