Poetry in Action

Poetry in Action visited the Senior School Campus on Wednesday to showcase and promote poetry as a relevant, significant, and important art form and writing style.  Years 9 and 10 viewed ‘International Anthem’.

This piece focused on poetry that reflects the cultural voice, how poetry can shape a voice and how this leads to an understanding of what it means to be Australian in the 21st Century.  This was challenging, and confronting, but rewarding for the students who came to understand that all of us have a right to be heard as much as we have a right to speak, and poetry has been, historically, the way for the voiceless to find expression.

Year 8 viewed ‘Elements of Rhyme’, a performance piece that invited students to look at the way poetry can be broken down into a series of key elements: rhyme, rhythm, theme, story, and image whilst listening to some key works from contemporary and historical writers – from Carrol’s Jabberwocky, Poe’s The Raven and finally Roald Dahl’s story of Pig.  It was an entertaining few hours for our students and brought many of our writers to life.
