At 6:00 am on Monday, 13 March, 20 eager Chemistry Year 11 students and I set off on an adventure to the only nuclear reactor in Australia, OPAL, at ANTSO Lucas Heights.
Learners delved into the world of nuclear medicine, particle acceleration and silicon irradiation.
Not only were we able to visit the active site, but we also measured the radioactivity of certain materials.

Students saw active scientists making all important molybdenum-99 used in medical imaging and the electron accelerator in function. This was an invaluable experience bringing the classroom and real-world science together.
