Aberdeen Highland Games

An exciting gathering of the clans

In the winter school holidays the College Pipes and Drums Band headed to Aberdeen in the Upper Hunter Region of New South Wales to attend the Aberdeen Highland Games, Saturday 5 July,  to savour the atmosphere of the Highlands and be part of this well-recognised event.

The Games began with a parade featuring bands, clan representatives, and others, leading into the Massed Band Salute and the Chieftain’s Address, which officially opens the event.

Throughout the day, there was fun for the whole family, including Highland and Country Dancing, Pipe Band performances, and Strongman events with the Kilted Warriors.

Attendees also enjoyed classic activities, such as three-legged races and the famous Kilted Dash. Surrounding the area, a variety of stalls sold an array of Scottish heirlooms, souvenirs, clothing, and food, adding to the festive atmosphere of the day.

During the display event that took place throughout the day, our Pipes & Drums showcased their skills with a youthful enthusiasm that was less noticeable in the other adult bands. Although we were not placed, the experience and knowledge gained will enable us to be formidable competitors next year.

That evening during the ensemble event, we achieved greater success, securing first and second place against much more seasoned competitors. The judge highlighted that our performances were thrilling and infused with innovative ideas. Furthermore, that night, the top prize in the quintet competition was awarded to Jack McCudden’s team – Jack is a Scots All Saints College alumni member from the graduating class of 2022.

The weekend was enjoyed by band members, family and friends and everyone looks forward to doing it all again next year.
