Head of College - Mr Richard Ford

I hope all families were able to enjoy some rest and time together over the long weekend and that this little breather helps sustain students, and all of us, through to the end of Term 2.

Over the weekend, we were very pleased to receive the news that a former staff member, who continues to regularly visit the College, had been included on the King’s Birthday Honour List.

Congratulations to Fudeko Reekie, who taught at All Saints’ for 35 years, for being honoured with the Order of Australia Medal (OAM). Fudeko’s efforts to foster relationships between students at the school and in Japan continues to benefit students at the College today.

This September, we are looking forward to taking approximately forty students to Japan to visit Yachiyo Shoin Gakuen, a sister school relationship which stretches back to 1992.

Further information about Fudeko’s service to the school and the city of Bathurst is expanded on towards the end of this week’s newsletter.

On Saturday, Mrs Woodlock and I are looking forward to attending the Warren Show to connect with both current and future boarder families.

Closer to home, next Friday the Music Showcase is on at BMEC. Do secure your tickets here over the next few days.

End of Semester 1 approaching
We have just over two weeks until the end of the first semester. Our students have had quite a few assessment tasks over the past weeks and possibly a few more before the end of the term. We encourage all students to continue to work hard right through until the end of the term. Our teachers, too, have been very busy marking and providing feedback for the students. We thank them for their dedication to this important aspect of their work, particularly as they manage the end-of-semester reporting requirements also.

Year 7 to 10 Semester 1 Reports
Over the coming weeks, our teachers will be completing the Semester 1 reports for students in Years 7 to 10. These should be ready to share with parents by the end of the term.

Over the past six months, we have been working on the format and process for these reports. Many parents will notice a change in the next lot of reports.

Previously, our reporting process relied upon information for each student in each course regarding an overall grade, a mark for effort and a teacher comment. Our new reports will provide greater detail including, an overall grade for the course, grades for course specific knowledge and skills based on outcomes studied over the semester, a mark for effort, feedback on individual learning behaviors, information on the rank of the student in comparison to others in the course and some learning recommendations or goals.

We hope that our parents/carers and students find these reports more informative, and we thank the team of teachers, IT staff and support staff for their work in getting this new reporting system up and running.

House Arts and Games Festival
Over the past week, we had the first and second of our scheduled House Meetings to plan and prepare for the House Arts and Games Festival. The House Captains and House Patrons have been working together to organise the students for the competitions in House Choir, House Band, House Play, House Poster, House Debating and House Games.

There should be a place for every student to contribute to their House in some way or another. The House Arts and Games Festival is a great way for the students to collaborate and celebrate the end of Semester 1.

We remind our students and parents/carers that ALL senior school students are expected to be at school on Thursday 26 June, for the House Arts and Games Festival competitions. The day will be filled with entertainment and fun. Our last day of Term 2 is Friday 27 June, which also serves as the boarding student travel day. Please do not plan early leave requests.

The schedule for Thursday 26 June will include an opportunity for parents to come and watch the House Choirs and see the final of the House Band Competition. This will be from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm.

To assist our out-of-Bathurst students, we will send our College bus services to Orange, Millthorpe, Blayney, Lithgow and Oberon to leave the College from 5:30 pm.

Police Youth Liaison Officer Talks
Visitors to the Senior School Campus over the past few weeks may have noticed a police vehicle parked on the front drive. Please do not be alarmed, we have had visits from our Local Area Command Police Youth Liaison Officers. So far, all year groups, apart from Year 11, have had a session with the officers.

Topics have included online safety and respectful communications using digital platforms and devices for Years 7 and 8, the dangers and consequences for inappropriate messaging and bullying online for Year 9, respectful and safe relationships including information on violence and forms of assault with Year 10 and a wide range of safe behaviours and common pitfalls for Year 12 in regard to partying, alcohol use, driver safety and consent.

We are very fortunate to have the support of our local Police Youth Liaison Officer, Jane, and we thank her for the professionalism and dedication that she provides to our students, our parents and the local community.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Junior School Athletics Carnival
The Inter-House Junior School Athletics Carnival will be held in Week 2 of next term on Tuesday 29 July. Parents are most welcome to come and support their children.

Write On Competition
Students from Stage 1-3 recently took part in NESA’s annual Write On competition. The competition focuses on developing students’ skills as young writers to express their ideas.

Classroom teachers selected two to three students from their class to take part in the competition and work with Mr Roohan over a series of sessions to create an imaginative text of up to 500 words, inspired by the stimulus ‘could they be changing.’ One piece of work was then selected from each stage that will be forwarded for judging by NESA.

Congratulations to all students who took part, and a special mention to Audrey Perrott, Alexa Erickson and Victor Chan, whose work will represent the college and be judged by a panel comprised of experienced NSW primary teachers from NESA.

Prep Eucalypt

Prep Eucalypt have been exploring all things starting with “m” and “d”.

We have been researching and classifying dinosaurs. Looking into their physical similarities and differences.

For “m” week, we have created some cute mini monkeys to take home.

Our group table activities have been testing our fine motor development, helping to strengthen fingers and hands.

Sports

Sports Draw

Congratulations to Millie Davies, who has successfully obtained her National B Badge Umpire Accreditation.

Millie has shown incredible dedication, working tirelessly alongside Netball NSW mentors to expand her knowledge and skills in netball umpiring. Her hard work and commitment paid off at the recent Netball State Titles, where she demonstrated a high level of competence and passed the rigorous assessment process.

Well done, Millie.

All the best to the students representing AICES or HICES at the CIS Cross Country Championships on Thursday 12 June, at the Sydney Equestrian Centre.

Book Buzz

The library is the place to be in this wintery weather, and it has been lovely to welcome so many of our students into our spaces across both campuses to find a warm spot to gather and share a book, game or both.

It’s the last week to borrow before holidays for K-2 this week and 3-6 next week. Be sure to check all the usual hiding places for those overdue library books and get them back to Mrs Mackay before we head off for the winter break.

Don’t forget, the Premier’s Reading Challenge continues this week. Keep reading and recording those books, and see Mrs Mackay if you have any questions.

The Senior School Campus library will be a particularly lively place over the next two weeks as we host the preliminary rounds of the House Debating. Junior and Senior teams from all five competition houses are challenged to put their mettle to the test in a series of lunchtime debates tackling topics based around this year’s House Arts Festival theme, Decades. Good luck to all our budding debaters!

Long-serving teacher, Fudeko Reekie, recognised in the King’s Birthday Honour List

Fudeko Reekie, who helped to tie two cities together forever, has been honoured with an OAM.

If it wasn’t for Fudeko Reekie, Bathurst’s sister city relationship with Okhuma might not have existed. For decades, she has been committed to building ties between the two cities and fostering an appreciation of Japanese culture within the Bathurst community. Fudeko also established a sister school relationship between All Saints’ and Yachiyo Shoin Gakuen in Chiba, Japan, in 1992. Fudeko facilitated cultural exchanges for students and teachers from All Saints’ and this sister school relationship has been continued with the new Scots All Saints College. There is an exchange visit planned for September this year by Scots All Saints students and staff.

Fudeko was a teacher at All Saints’ for 35 years, teaching Japanese and Art. Around the same time Fudeko started teaching at All Saints’, Japanese tourists were frequenting the Bathurst area, and she was called upon to greet them, show them around and act as an interpreter. She became so well-known and respected that in 1989, when Okhuma was looking to establish a sister city relationship in Australia, representatives travelled to Bathurst to speak to her, and she convinced them that Bathurst was the right location.

She continued to provide her support for the sister city relationship and played an important role when the Okhuma Garden was established on the Macquarie riverside. Okhuma sent staff over to assist with the project, and Fudeko would visit the site regularly, bringing sushi and tea and providing her interpreter services. She also assisted in sourcing the right materials for the monument, but admitted she did not actually lift the large sandstone blocks into position! This garden remains a special place for her. Fudeko has also been named a Living Legend and has a tree and plaque at the Okhuma Japanese Garden in her honour.

Fudeko has published numerous nonfiction books and textbooks, which continue to be used in schools today. She preserved her own story through the publication of her book, A Wonderful Life: My Memoir, in 2015. She was the author of Bathurst My City, which tells the story of significant buildings and landmarks in the region.

The book, which was printed in both English and Japanese, also contains pictures painted by her of these precious places. The books and paintings are part of her legacy in Bathurst, and so is the Japanese Centre she created on the All Saints’ Campus in 1992. In 2010, the Fudeko Reekie Language Centre was renamed to recognise her contributions to the College. At present, this building is the Scots All Saints Head of the Junior School office and Staff room. She calls this building ‘the most important legacy I am leaving’.

In addition to receiving an OAM, Fudeko was honoured by Japan with the Order of the Rising Sun in 2013 – this award is rarely given to people living outside Japan.
