Head of College - Mr Richard Ford

The College’s Pipes and Drums regularly represent the College with distinction. This was no different last weekend as the band performed on several occasions at the Australian Highland Cattle Society National Show here in Bathurst, delighting all who were in attendance. Thank you to Mr McKenzie and all parents who supported the band with this event.

It was good to see a number of families at the showground in Bathurst on Sunday, at the Warren Show on the Saturday and in Orange last night. This coming week, we will be in Millthorpe on Tuesday 16 June, and hope to see more families at this Meet and Greet. Please register here if you would like to attend.

Accolades for students involved in public speaking continue to flow our way, and congratulations go to:

  • Students who competed in the CWA public speaking competition, in which Patrick Lenehan and Bella Starr placed 2nd. In addition, Evie Mason, Heidi Matthews, Jake Worswick and Tess Yordanoff placed 4th; and
  • Salmana Mahmood, Liam Erickson, Amelia Humphreys, Sophie O’Brien and Archie MacLean, who are part of our Year 10 Debating Team. In a competition that comprises 55 schools, these students are now vying for a place in the HICES final. These students are working wonderfully well as a team and displaying incredible composure under pressure.

Later this year, several students are gearing up to participate in the final Edgell Jog in September. Students who are interested in participating should contact Mr McClintock to register their interest. Two students, Matthew and Alexandra Slater, who will no doubt participate in this run, are also highly accomplished with orienteering and will shortly head overseas to compete in the Australian Team. First up, Matthew will compete in the Men’s M18 category for the European Youth Orienteering Competition in Slovenia. Subsequently, Matthew and Alexandra will both compete in O-Ringen in Gothenburg, Sweden, in July. An annual 5-day event with around 15-20,000 competitors from around the world.

Having seen some of the rehearsing that has been taking place for tonight’s Music Showcase, there is definitely an excellent evening of music ahead for all who are attending. Thank you to Ms Sargeant and all the music staff who have supported students in preparing to take to the stage. Tickets are available here if you are able to come along.

Millthorpe – Tuesday 16 June

Lego Spike Challenge

Every Tuesday at lunchtime for the past eight weeks, a group of dedicated STEM enthusiasts from Years 4 and 5 have gathered together and worked in a team to design and program a robot as part of our Lego Spike Challenge. Teams were required to design an amazing creation that could autonomously explore and navigate a specific environment in the future as Earth’s environments change. I’ve been most impressed with each participant’s willingness to work collaboratively through the ideate and prototype phases of the challenge.

Basketball success for Archie

Congratulations to Archie Willis (team captain) and the Bathurst Goldminers Under 12 Boys on an outstanding basketball season that continues to go from strength to strength.

After completing the Western Junior League (WJL) season undefeated, the team has now added another major achievement to their growing list of successes by winning the prestigious John Martin Country Tournament undefeated as well.

The talented squad of ten boys faced strong competition throughout the tournament, recording impressive victories against Canberra, Central Coast, Newcastle, Dubbo and Illawarra to secure their place in the Grand Final over the long weekend. There, they produced another dominant performance, defeating Canberra Gunners Blue 52–25 to be crowned champions in Division 2.

This is a tremendous achievement and a testament to the hard work, dedication, teamwork and sportsmanship shown by the players, coaches and support staff throughout the season. The team’s exciting journey is far from over, with the Goldminers set to compete in Wagga during the upcoming school holidays before turning their attention to the NSW State Cup in August.

Adding to the celebrations, Archie has recently been selected as one of just 100 boys across New South Wales to attend the NSW Basketball Jamboree in September. This is a wonderful recognition of his commitment, skill and development within the sport.

We congratulate Archie and all members of the Goldminers Under 12 Boys team on their outstanding achievements and wish them every success as they continue their representative basketball journey.

Sports

Sports Draw

Although it was a bye weekend for College sport, there was still plenty of sporting action over the long weekend, with many of our students representing their regions at the Rugby, Netball, and Hockey State Championships.

Congratulations to the following students who represented Central West or Southern Inland Rugby Union at the State Championships:

Under 14 Boys and Girls – Dubbo

Under 16 Girls – Granville
Olive Moppett, Amelie O’Brien, Hattie Brabin and Zoe Carter (SIRU)

Under 18 Boys and Girls – Concord

There were several strong performances across the championships, with the Central West Under 14 Boys finishing runners-up after a hard-fought Grand Final, narrowly going down to Penrith 19-10. The Under 14 Girls faced strong opposition and finished 4th among the country teams.

In the Under 16 Girls division, Central West claimed victory in the Plate Final, while Southern Inland Rugby Union finished an impressive 5th overall.

The Under 18 Girls also placed 5th overall, while the Under 18 Boys finished 4th among the country teams.

A special mention to Sophie Culley and Murray Worthington, who have been selected in the Under 14 Country Rugby Union Squads. They will now attend further training sessions and regional tournaments before the final Country team is selected to compete at the annual City versus Country Carnival. Congratulations, Sophie and Murray, all the best for the next stage of the representative season.

In the Under 15s competition, Blayney finished 11th in Division 4, Bathurst finished 13th in Division 2, and Cowra finished 15th in Division 4.

Well done to all students on their fantastic efforts and representation.

Congratulations also to Emily Tallentire, who represented Bathurst at the Open Hockey State Titles in Wollongong. This is a fantastic achievement and adds to Emily’s growing list of sporting accomplishments already this year.

Book Buzz

I hope you all enjoyed the slower start to the week and were able to take some time to curl up with a good book in the winter sunshine we enjoyed over the long weekend. There’s plenty still happening in the library this term, with new reads arriving on the shelves every day in the Junior library and, of course, the Premier’s Reading Challenge continues, so keep checking for the PRC stickers as you borrow each week.

As we head into the last weeks of term, it’s time to check all the usual hiding places for those overdue library books and get them back to Mrs Mackay before we head off for the winter break.

The House Debating preliminary rounds will begin later this week on the Senior campus, so be sure to stop by and support the debaters in your House as they battle it out for a place in the finals.

Chairmen of the Council of The Scots School

For this column, we take a break from reviewing the Headmasters of The Scots School and look at another group that made a major contribution to Scots. Each year in their annual reports, Headmasters have mentioned the important role that the School Council or Board has played in the governance of the School, and thanked the members for their efforts and the time they have put into their roles. This article is about the men (and they were all men) who chaired the School Council and Board.

The foundation Chairman of the School Council was Rev. Alan Dougan. He had helped Scots College establish the Branch School in Bathurst and chaired the Local Committee that assisted with its running. He was one of the leading proponents for the foundation of a Presbyterian school in Bathurst. Rev. Dougan was Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in NSW in 1956. In 1957, he was appointed as Master of St Andrew’s College at Sydney University, a position that he held until 1974. He was offered the position of Moderator General of the Presbyterian Church in Australia in 1979, but declined because of health issues. Rev. Dougan did return to the Scots Council for a time in the 1960s, representing the Trustees of the Presbyterian Church. He is commemorated with the Dougan Wing of classrooms, and the Day House is also still Dougan House.

Lorna Ray, the College’s neighbour at the Senior Campus, knew Alan Dougan. She once told a story about Alan Dougan being a bit of a closet racing driver. She told us that he used to enjoy getting up some speed on the Highway and testing out cars.

From 1958 to 1964, the Chairman of the Council was Dr Ralph Cameron. Dr Cameron was the School Doctor for many years and a partner in the Busby Medical Practice. His patients included one-time Prime Minister Ben Chifley. Dr Cameron was notable for introducing several new pieces of medical equipment and modern treatments into Bathurst, including the first cardio encephalogram machine. The Library was named in his honour in 1991.

After the position was filled for a year by the Bathurst Presbyterian Church’s Minister Rev. J. A. F. Watson, in 1966 Mr Campbell Alexander was elected Chairman. Mr Alexander was an accountant from Sydney. His period as Chairman (until 1981) covered the Headmasterships of Michael Aikman and John Hunter. In that time, a school that was in danger of closing in 1966 was not only turned around but also grew to record high levels of enrolment. It was also a period of massive capital expenditure on new buildings and other facilities. Cam Alexander decided on a change in his life, and after retiring from the Council, he went back to university to study Law and made a new career in that field. The Alexander Maths Centre commemorates his contribution.

A peak in enrolments was achieved during the time of the next Chairman, Mr D. L. (George) Dalziell. In 1986, the enrolments reached 386, a figure not attained again until three decades later. As a result of several successful building appeals, the Hunter-era building boom continued under his Chairmanship.

There was no one reason for the problems that beset Scots in 1996, but recession, drought, and boarding schools going out of fashion were some of the problems that the school’s governors battled as the 21st Century approached. At the time, too, the Principals of the state High Schools in Bathurst were running very successful schools. Various strategies were employed, and the Headmaster and Council worked very hard to advertise and promote the school and make changes to make it more attractive to a changing market. As a result of the financial crisis of 1996, the Presbyterian Church re-organised the governance of the School. A new School Board, as it became known, was constituted with Mr Col Langford as Chairman. Mr Langford worked for the NSW Department of Agriculture, was an Adjunct Research Associate at Charles Sturt University and a member of the Presbyterian Congregation in Goulburn.

Before he took up the Chairman’s position, Mr Langford questioned whether or not Scots had a future. He was challenged to take on the role of Chairman to resolve its problems. He took up the challenge and remained ever after a staunch advocate and promoter for the School, and the longest-serving Chairman in its history. The first major challenge of his Chairmanship was reducing the School’s debt level and re-organising its finances to ensure the problems did not recur. Increasing the number of overseas students was one strategy, which resulted in a number of outstanding students from China, Korea, Japan and Thailand becoming students of Scots and taking up Rugby League. There were setbacks, mostly caused by drought, which affected rural enrolments, but over the next few years, the numbers steadily crept up again, and there was, for the first time in many years, some new buildings, notably Dougan House (2003), the Lamrock Performing Arts Centre (2010) and the new Swimming Pool (2011). Col Langford resigned from the School Board in 2013. He was elected Moderator of the Presbyterian Church for that year.

Col Langford’s replacement was Adrian Lamrock, already well known to the Scots community from his term as Principal of the school, 1998-2003. During Adrian’s time, a member of the teaching staff observed that the Chairman’s Speech Day reports no longer mentioned debt levels and were quite upbeat. Enrolments approached the 1986 peak, the School was able to match the funds raised by the P&F to build the Tim Richards Pavilion, and was generally in a strong financial position.

One Sunday morning in August 2017, Adrian received a phone call from a senior member of the Presbyterian Property Trust and was advised to sit down, as he had some important news. Adrian was informed that the Presbyterian Church had made an offer to the Bishop in Council of the Anglican Diocese of Bathurst to buy All Saints College. The financially troubled Diocese had been forced to sell All Saints—but that is another story. The Bishop in Council had accepted the offer, and a little over a year later, Scots All Saints College was inaugurated. It was to be governed by a new Council.

Between 1946 and the end of 2017, Scots had 7 Chairmen of Council or Board. In the same period, there had been 11 Headmasters and 1 Principal. There were two occasions during those years (1966 and 1996) when there was doubt about whether or not the school would continue, but despite the various circumstances that conspired to make life difficult for Scots, the School’s governance team had successfully navigated it through all of them, and in Scots’ 80th anniversary year, we recognise their work.
