Head of College - Mr Richard Ford

With just over one week remaining in this term, most families will soon be receiving student reports, which we hope are helpful to students and families as together you reflect on the term just gone and have conversations about student goals for the term ahead.

While the end of term is close, the term does not finish until next Friday, and it is expected that students will be present and fully involved in College life and learning right through to the finish.

This coming week is Subject Selection for Year 11 2026 (tonight), Music Showcase (Friday night), a full round of Winter Sport, an author visit to both campuses and House Arts Festival.

Last weekend, Mrs Woodlock and I thoroughly enjoyed our time at Warren Show connecting with families past, present and future. This weekend, Mrs Woodlock and Ms Taylor are looking forward to meeting with families at the Wagga Boarding Expo.

Next term, Mr Hughes (incoming Director of Boarding in Term 3) and I are looking forward to visiting more regional locations together. Mr Hughes visited the College this week and had the opportunity to meet with several students and staff, get to know the rhythms of the College day and be interviewed on assembly. As we look forward to welcoming Mr Hughes more formally to the College next term, I also wish to acknowledge and thank Mr Oakes and Mrs Woodall for their collective leadership of the boarding community over the last two terms.

Another visitor to assembly this week was Mr Paul Toole MP. Mr Toole, who came and presented two students, Gemma Norton and Callum Munns, with certificates to recognise their respective artistic and AFL achievements. We are thankful to Mr Toole for making time to visit.

Gratitude and kindness have been at the forefront of the Junior School Wellbeing Week over the last few days. Mrs Nicholls, with support from Junior School staff and SRC, organised an array of special activities to help students grow in character and how they live out College values. Many thanks to Mrs Nicholls for her organisation of the week and leadership of Pastoral Care and Wellbeing at the Junior School.

This week, all of the Junior School students have been involved in a range of fun activities that teach them how to feel calm, strong, and happy as part of our Wellbeing Week.

Scots All Saints College Hosts Final Day of King’s Birthday Orienteering Event
On Monday 9 June, the Junior School Campus proudly hosted the third and final day of the prestigious King’s Birthday three-day orienteering carnival. A crisp winter morning greeted 343 competitors, who lined up to tackle the fast-paced sprint orienteering course around the campus grounds.

Participants ranged in age from just four years old to an impressive 90, with course lengths varying from 1 km to 3.2 km. The event was made more challenging with the inclusion of artificial barriers, which introduced complex route choices and tested both speed and strategic decision-making.

Scots All Saints College was well represented with three students taking part: Matthew Slater, Alexandra Slater, and Levi Gillmer. Notably, Matthew Slater not only competed but also mapped the campus and served as the organiser for Day 3 – an impressive contribution to the success of the event.

This year’s King’s Birthday carnival also served as the selection trial for the NSW Schools Orienteering Team. We are delighted to announce that both Matthew Slater and Alexandra Slater have been selected to represent NSW at the national championships to be held in Queensland during the September school holidays.

Congratulations to all competitors and especially to our talented students for their outstanding achievements and contributions! A big thank you to Mr Chris Jackman and the school community for their support of the event.

Sports Draw

Congratulations to Angus Argent-Smith, who finished 9th at the CIS Cross Country Carnival and has qualified to compete at the NSW All Schools Cross Country on Tuesday 22 July. Best of luck, Angus.

A special mention also goes to Patrick Lenehan, who put in a strong performance to finish 9th. Unfortunately, only the top six placegetters qualify for the NSW PSSA team, but it was an outstanding effort nonetheless.

Well done to the following students who also achieved fantastic results, finishing in the top 20 of their race.

9th Angus Argent-Smith, 9th Patrick Lenehan, 16th Peggy Hunter, 17th Juliet Erickson, 17th Benjamin Lenehan, 17th Lucy Tallentire.

Scots All Saints College proudly participated in Phase One of the Netball NSW Schools Cup held in Orange on Wednesday 18 June. This year, we were excited to field five teams in the competition, three girls’ teams and two boys’ teams, who competed with great spirit and enthusiasm against schools from across Bathurst and Orange.

We are thrilled to announce that both our Year 9/10 Girls team and Year 7/8 Boys team went undefeated throughout the day, earning a well-deserved place in the Central West Regional Finals.

Congratulations to all our players for their effort, determination, and commitment. A big thank you to our dedicated staff for their time and preparation in supporting our teams.

Scots All Saints College proudly hosted Girls Rugby fixtures for our Under 14 and Under 16 teams against MacKillop College on Friday 13 June. The afternoon was filled with excitement, teamwork, and outstanding sportsmanship, as our students displayed their skills on the field.

Both matches were tightly contested. The Under 14s fought hard in a close game but narrowly missed out on a win, while the Under 16s secured a fantastic victory.

Come along and support our teams this Friday as we host another round of matches starting from 3:45 pm on Old Boys Oval.

Director of Sport and Activities

Book Buzz

The library has been the place to be this week, with plenty happening across both campuses. Our Year 3-6 lessons saw us continue our reading of Anton Clifford-Motopi’s entertaining CBCA shortlisted novel To and Fro. We are very much enjoying this author’s humorous turn of phrase and clever plotting.

It’s the last week to borrow before the holidays for 3-6 this week. Be sure to check all the usual hiding places for those overdue library books and get them back to Mrs Mackay before we head off for the winter break.

In exciting news, the College will be visited by author Dee White next week. Dee is the author of over 20 books for preschool-aged children, primary school-aged children and young adults. Dee will spend Wednesday with our Year 7 and 9 students on the Senior campus and Thursday on the Junior campus with our students from P-6.

Dee is keen to meet with students at lunchtime in the library on both campuses and will have a limited number of signed copies of her books for sale on the day. If you wish for your child to purchase one of these books, please see the price list and order instructions attached to the notice in Operoo for Dee’s visit.

Finally, the House Debating preliminary rounds on the Senior campus are well underway. Cowan has progressed in the Juniors and Dunlop in the Seniors and will battle it out in the heats with Mawson, Booth and Cuthbert. With our finalists to be determined by the end of the week, we all look forward to a high-quality finals series on the day of the House Arts Festival.

Work Experience

During the last week of May, I participated in a work experience program at the Australian Federal Police’s Majura Forensic Facility, spending five intense days alongside specialists. We began by developing fingerprints, dusting envelopes with carbon powder, and comparing them under magnification, before moving on to DNA swabbing.

Guided by biologists, we collected mock samples and watched how a lab can now produce a profile in less than a day. The programme’s sharpest demonstration came at the Canine Unit, where detector dogs located a USB stick hidden in a couch in under thirty seconds. It was a clear reminder that technology leaves a trace, no matter how clever the hiding spot.

Throughout the week, crime-scene examiners, chemists, digital analysts and biologists outlined their career paths, emphasising how there are so many different pathways to becoming a forensic scientist. I finished with a certificate and a notebook full of forensic work. If this sounds like your kind of challenge, keep an eye on the AFP Forensics Work Experience Programme: applications open each February and places disappear fast, so submit yours as early as possible.

Peter Lough

About four years ago, the College was delighted to be contacted by Peter Lough, who in 1946 was Scots School student No. 21. Unfortunately, Peter was withdrawn from the school during 1947. He required surgery, and nearly 80 years ago, that entailed a far longer recovery period than is possible with modern medical techniques.

Despite his brief period at Scots, his family reported that Peter reminisced often about his two years there and how much he had enjoyed his time at the school. His father donated the boxing gloves that were used at Scots when pugilism was part of the culture of boys’ schools.

In 2021, Peter saw a photo of the foundation students of 1946, including him, on The Scots School Old Boys and Girls Facebook page, which rekindled his memories of his time there.  His daughter got in touch with the archives staff, and after more than 70 years, there was great delight from the school community, especially the “Karralee Boys”, to have some news of Peter. He was invited to attend the Old Boys’ reunions but was prevented by increasing frailty. However, he, Mrs Lough, and Mr Maher had a chat on the phone one morning, and his daughter kept us informed about him.

Peter had quite a few memories of the school. He was allowed to wear his Homebush High School blazer, and is wearing it in a photo taken of him. Peter was a resident of “The Kennel” (now Ives House) when John Bulkeley was the Housemaster. The boys would hide sweets under their pillows to eat during the night. Out of school hours, the boys amused themselves by wandering around the paddocks that have since become the Senior School Campus. Peter later became a mechanical engineer, studied for a Master’s Degree in Education and taught Engineering for the Department of TAFE.

Sadly, the latest news from Peter’s family is that he passed away recently. The Head of College has been in touch with his family to express our condolences.  It was a pleasure and a privilege to have been in contact with Peter, who was a vital link to the early days of Scots.
