Head of College - Mr Richard Ford

Thank you to all parents who made time recently to complete the survey that was sent out. Feedback from parents is always welcomed. What you have shared will be considered over the last part of this year and early next year to inform planning for 2026 and beyond.

One exciting new opportunity being explored for 2026 could see the College have its own permanent RFS brigade established at the Senior School.

For many years, the College has offered students the opportunity to be involved in a 10-week RFS Cadet program. We are currently seeing whether there is interest from students in Year 7 to Year 10 this year in being able to participate in RFS throughout the year.

Last night, Mr Anthony Head facilitated the delivery of an excellent presentation, which outlined for families the benefits of being part of a newly formed brigade. Benefits discussed included development of: leadership and team building; discipline and self-confidence; adaptability and resourcefulness; as well as respect and integrity. For students wanting to work towards different levels of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, involvement in an RFS Brigade can also help fulfil the required hours for voluntary service, skills, and physical recreation.

If you have a child in Year 7 to Year 10 who missed the presentation but who is interested in participating, please email Mr Head. He would be only too happy to share more information with you.

During Senior School Assembly this week I shared with students about the responsibility each of them have to live out the College Value of Respect each day, including on Saturday when many students represent the College at sport.

Students were reminded that the expectations are as follows:

Before the Game

  • Be on time for pre-game preparation
  • Be dressed only in Scots All Saints College uniform (this extends to shorts, outer layers, caps etc)
  • Be well groomed (appropriate hair, clean shaven etc.)
  • Be respectful and courteous as either host (showing visitors where to go and checking if they need anything) or visitor (thanking host and taking good care of their facility)

During the game

  • Follow the decisions of match officials and the rules of the game (the Captain alone may respectfully ask for clarification)
  • Acknowledge good play by either team
  • Avoid celebrating mistakes by the other team or criticising mistakes by your own team
  • Control your tongue and use it in positive ways (no abusive language, no denigration of players and no verbal provocation)
  • Refrain from physical altercations or deliberate violence
  • Avoid exhibiting self-disgust when personal or team errors occur (throwing bat, hitting fist against a wall etc.)

After the game

  • Thank and shake hands with the other team
  • Thank and shake hands with game officials
  • Be humble in victory (avoid gloating to the other team or rubbing it in)
  • Be gracious in defeat (stay dignified and avoid blame)

I look forward to seeing students during the summer season of sport showing respect at all times to match officials, the opposition, teammates and the College.

Head of College

Sports

Sports Draw

Well done to Drew Barnett, who competed at the Capital Strength Event on Sunday 19 October. Drew came away with four national records in the Squat (162.5kg), Bench Press (130kg), Deadlift (240kg), and a Total of 532.5kg. This is an outstanding achievement and excellent preparation for the Euro Classic Qualifiers next year.

Congratulations also to Charlotte Shoemark, who has been selected for the 15 and Under CIS Cricket Team. Charlotte will now head to Maitland for the NSW All Schools Cricket Trials, from Tuesday 25 to Thursday 27 November. We wish you all the best, Charlotte!

Book Buzz

This week, over on the Junior campus, we began work on our digital wellbeing unit, focusing on the different ways we can stay happy and healthy online by making smart media choices, avoiding thinking traps, and thinking carefully about where we focus our attention. Year 3-6 had the opportunity to reflect on their own media use and screen time habits, and we look forward to continuing to develop positive and balanced relationships with technology across the remainder of the term.

Over on the Senior campus, in our Year 9 library lessons, we continued our investigation of Artificial Intelligence, interrogating the role online algorithms play in the content we consume. It was interesting to consider the impact of online algorithms on our thinking and behaviour in the offline world, a connection we will keep exploring throughout the term.

Marsden Jubilee Time Capsule
On 27 September 1974, the Jubilee Time Capsule was buried near the steps of Rutherford House to celebrate 50 years since the opening of Marsden School for Girls in 1925. This Time Capsule was then moved over to the All Saints’ Campus in 1983 following the closing of Marsden and the merging of the two schools.

On Saturday 27 September this year, the same Time Capsule was unearthed and its contents carefully removed in front of a large crowd of Marsden Old Girls, many having been at the original burial of the capsule. There was a brief talk from historian Christopher Morgan on the history of Marsden, a singing of the School Hymn Ad Lucem and a reading of the school psalm Levavi Oculos, and a speech from Christine Thompson (Gabb) on the events of the year 1975.

The opening of the Time Capsule took some time, but with the help of many, it was at last pulled out of the ground and the lid removed. Belinda Boshier (Batterham) was given the task of carefully removing the items one by one and placing them on a table for everyone to see.

It was a wonderful day for so many who were able to see their own contributions to the capsule in the form of their carefully written names on the scroll or photos of themselves in the newspaper articles contained in the capsule.

Other items contained in the Time Capsule were handwritten Scrolls, Timetables, a dining hall menu, calendars, various school badges, hatbands, cloth samples from various uniforms, 1975 coins and stamps, Duke of Edinburgh Award badges, a Marsden School prospectus, a Western Advocate Newspaper supplement featuring Marsden, The Pilgrim, and a tape recorded during the Jubilee Festival. This tape made for very interesting listening as there were voices of the many attending the festival who were present 50 years later at the unearthing. Unfortunately, very few tape recorders are around today, so we are hoping to place the recording into some other format for those who would like to hear themselves as they were 50 years ago.

Earlier in the day, many of the Marsden Old Girls went over to the old Marsden site – now the Bathurst Catholic Education Office and were shown around by Dr Vince O’Connor. As they visited each part of the building, the girls were reminded of their school days and the fun they had.

There was also a photo and a memorabilia display in the school dining room, and the MOGS and their families had a great time seeing themselves and their friends as they were over 50 years ago. The many photo albums on display still needed details, and several of the girls were able to add details, which were greatly appreciated by the archivist.

The same display was visited by the classes in the Junior School, who were delighted by the ‘old images’ and seeing their own Mrs Boshier in photos as a 1st form student with long pigtails and as the Gymnastic Champion in 1975!
