Head of College - Mr Richard Ford

This week has been full of celebrating significant milestones for students in the College.

On Wednesday, Preparatory School students gathered together with parents and grandparents to celebrate their growth this year. The songs and poems which were performed were all full of zest, and the Preparatory School Staff are to be congratulated on their stellar work with the youngest students in the College this year.

Tomorrow, the attention turns to Year 6 as they attend both their final Junior School Chapel Service and a special dinner with their families. We are proud of the many ways in which Year 6 have contributed to the Junior School. While I know Year 6 will miss the wonderful Junior School teachers next year, it is clear that they are also ready to step up and embrace new challenges that will come their way in Year 7.

November is often a busy month for reunions, and this year has been no different. Thank you to Mr Maher and Mrs Sanders for their help in welcoming past students back for tours and a trip down memory lane. Next year is a particularly special year for past students of The Scots School Bathurst as we mark 80 years since the foundation of the school. On Saturday 24 October 2026, past families will be invited to come together for a celebratory afternoon. If you are a past student of The Scots School Bathurst, please share this date with your cohort and plan to reconnect in Bathurst in late October 2026.

Scots All Saints Students Shine with CAT Award Nominations

The Arts team at Scots All Saints College is celebrating two exciting nominations in the prestigious 2025 CAT Awards.

Ed Neill has been nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for their outstanding portrayal of Ryan in High School Musical, while the energetic and talented Wildcats Cheerleaders have been recognised with a nomination for Best Ensemble in a School or Youth Production.

These nominations are a wonderful acknowledgement of the students’ dedication, creativity and teamwork, and a testament to the exceptional guidance of Ms Bate (Director), and Mrs Casey and Miss Tomlinson (Choreographers), whose passion and expertise brought the production to life.

Congratulations to all cast and crew for this incredible achievement! We wish our nominees the very best of luck for the CAT Awards presentation in January 2026.

Sports Draw

Congratulations to Lochlan Shoemark on his selection in the ISA Opens Cricket Team.

Lochlan will now compete in representative fixtures against GPS and CAS early next year before progressing to the CIS trial phase. In addition to this achievement, Lochlan has had a busy and successful week at the Under 17 State Challenge, a selection event for the NSW Under 17 Country Team, where he produced strong performances, scoring 27 and 63, and bowling figures of 2/20 and 3/20 across two matches.

Well done to Callum Munns, who has commenced the ISA Cricket season in exceptional form, posting two centuries as well as scores of 88 and 53 across the opening five fixtures. Callum also represented the College at the ISA Opens Cricket trials this week, where he performed admirably and was narrowly edged out of final selection.

On Wednesday, the Junior School Triathlon was held for students in Years 3–6. It was a fantastic event marked by high levels of enthusiasm and enjoyment from all students involved. Well done to every competitor for their efforts and participation throughout the day.

A sincere thank you to the staff whose organisation and support ensured the event ran smoothly.

Director of Sport and Activities

Book Buzz

This week, over on the Junior campus, in our library lessons, we continued our exploration of digital safety with a lesson on digital footprints. It was interesting to contemplate our own digital footprints and think about how we can be more conscious of tracking our presence online.

Mrs Mackay will be away for the remainder of the term. Mrs Gilmore will be helping out in the library in her absence. We thank her for so ably stepping in to keep the library running smoothly.
A reminder about Scholastic Book Club.

Issue 7 closed on Monday 3 November, and orders will be distributed to students later this week or early next week.

The final Book Club for 2025 Issue 8 is available for collection from the library, Preparatory School or Reception.

The online booklet is available for viewing, ordering and payment. When placing online orders, please have your items delivered to your home address rather than the school, as we cannot guarantee delivery before the end of the school year.

All orders for Issue 8 need to be submitted online by 24 November 2025.

It’s that time of year when all our books need to find their way back to the shelves. There will be no borrowing for the final two weeks of term, and we ask that all students check at home and in their bags for any overdue books. Please return them to Mrs Davis or Mrs Gilmore before the end of the term.

Over on the Senior campus, in our Year 9 library lessons, we are continuing our study of digital citizenship, this week focusing on the skill of lateral reading to assist us in deciphering fact from fiction. We had some fun exploring hoaxes and considering the ways in which AI presents even greater challenges to our ability to critically reflect on information.

Short Courses and Microcredentials

Free and low-cost TAFE micro-credentials you can do while you’re still at school

If you’re looking to build practical skills while still in high school, TAFE micro-credentials might be worth exploring. These are short, focused courses that give you something tangible to show for your effort – usually a certificate or digital badge. Many are online and self-paced, and some are fully funded depending on where you live.

Think of these as entry points rather than an exhaustive list – once you’ve had a look at what’s available in your state, you can dig deeper into the full catalogues to find courses that match your interests.

One important note: details and eligibility can change throughout the year, so always check the age requirements and funding criteria on the provider’s page before you get too excited about a particular course.

New South Wales

Start with the TAFE NSW Microcredentials hub and their Microskills catalogue.

Courses worth checking out:

If you’re interested in emerging technologies, have a look at their Electric Vehicles, Batteries and Charging Stations cluster – it’s a solid introduction to this growing field. There are also several renewable and clean-energy themed microskills that offer short, practical tasters of the industry.

The full catalogue includes business, digital and visitor-economy microskills that are designed to be approachable for school-aged learners. It’s worth browsing to see what catches your eye.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme

There is a history of this scheme here at All Saints’ and Marsden, as both schools were running the Duke of Edinburgh program beginning in the 1960s. Marsden began running the scheme in the early 1960s, and many girls achieved various levels over the next 10 years. There was great excitement when the late Duke of Edinburgh visited Bathurst and Marsden School on 26 October 1973. On that day, he presented Gold Awards to 16 recipients in Bathurst – 15 Marsden girls.

We have an Honour Board here in the Kemmis building, and there are the names of 35 girls who completed the program in the years 1972 to 1976. Since then, as Marsden was amalgamated with All Saints’, the program stopped for a while until the 1990s, when it began under the management of teacher Trevor Hegvold and parent Lee Steele. Over the next 15 years, many students joined the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme and completed various stages. Our records held here have given 21 more names of those who completed the program between 1992 and 2004 and received their Gold Award, and we have added those to the Honour Board.

The Duke of Edinburgh program relies very much on the volunteers, instructors and teachers who manage and oversee the many different activities involved, as each participant can choose their own program to follow. In the archives, we have collected some photos of various groups at different activities in their pursuit of the awards.

It is encouraging to see that the Duke of Edinburgh program is still going strong at Scots All Saints, and hopefully, many will eventually achieve their Gold Award to join those who have gone before them.

Reunions

The last few weeks have been busy with Scots past students holding reunions. A few weeks ago, the Class of 1995 held a reunion in Sydney. Since then, the Class of 1985, with some members of the Class of 1987 and a few other invited guests, gathered at the Imperial Hotel in Paddington. Last Saturday, thirteen members of the Scots Class of 2005 visited the Senior Campus for a tour and a gathering in town.

The past students have very much appreciated the presence of former (or current) staff of the College who have been able to join them for their reunions.

There is one more group to meet up: Steve Marshall is organising a 50 year gathering of the Class of 1975. It will be held on Saturday November 29.
