Nine College Senior School students headed to the NSW School Merino Wether Challenge in Dubbo from 11 – 13 August, joining 600 students from 72 schools in the nationwide initiative designed to give students a practical, hands-on learning experience.
Earlier in the year, 450 Merino wethers were purchased by the Dubbo National Ram Show and Sale Association with support from NSW Stud Merino Breeders Association and six wethers were provided to each school’s team of students to care for at school for six months, culminating in the two-day final at the National Merino Sheep Show.
At the show students participated in the showing and judging of wethers which were judged on wool, re-stocker and carcase value. Students also participated in a series of educational workshops, a careers panel, working dog demonstrations and a young farmers challenge.
The College Sheep Team students have invested a lot of time and hard work in the management and care of their wethers and were incredibly successful in their zone, with their allocated wethers receiving 1st place for combined value and carcass value along with 3rd place for fleece value.
Thank you to organisers and parents who came and supported us. It was an exceptional few days engaging with the sheep and wool industry.
