On the first Saturday of the April school holidays, 24 students and staff headed off on a History Tour of Germany and Italy.
The group’s first stop was Munich, where they visited the Jewish Museum to learn about the Jewish heritage and population in Munich, as well as seeing the synagogue. The afternoon was spent at the Residence, the palace complex of Bavarian royalty, where all manner of opulence was on display.
Day three began with a short trip to Dachau, where the group was shown through the concentration camp structures, including barracks and crematorium, learning about the harrowing experiences of prisoners under Nazi rule.
Day four was spent at Nuremberg. The group embarked on a three-hour walking tour of the Nuremberg Rally Grounds, seeing the massive Congress Hall, modelled on the Colosseum and one of the largest remaining Nazi architectural relics and the Zeppelin Field, a famous site for mass parades.
The group then travelled to Berlin, where they visited Unter den Linden, the Holocaust Memorial, the Brandenburg Gates, and the site of Hitler’s Bunker.
The next stop was Naples and Rome, where they visited the National Archaeological Museum, Pompeii, the Isle of Capri, the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.
