Busyness and success in Visual Arts

This term began with the great achievements of several students’ artworks acknowledged outside of our College. Gemma Norton of year 10 had her charcoal portrait of her grandfather, titled “Shadows Inherited”, accepted into the Young Archies at the Art Gallery of NSW.

This is an incredible accomplishment, as this annual exhibition has hundreds of entries across NSW every year, with work of an exceptional standard. Gemma’s work sits beautifully within this collection of works and is on exhibition at the Gallery in Sydney until 17 August.

Art at Bathurst Show

A number of students’ artworks were selected by their teachers to be exhibited at the Bathurst show and were up against some impressive competition. However, Scots All Saints students, Theo Lyle (Year 7), Juliet Erickson (Year 7), Jadon Chen (Year 8), Paige Moffitt (Year 8) and Evan Goldsmith (Year 8) all took out places in their sections. Congratulations on these wonderful accolades.

The Foundations Portland

On Tuesday of Week 2, Years 9 and 10 Visual Arts classes visited The Foundations Portland. Run by Arts Out West and The Foundations, students attended two workshops hosted by local artists Harrie Fasher and Simone Darcy.

Harrie hosted a studio tour and discussion session in her enormous foundry studio, where her process and artworks were on display. Her generous hospitality and insight into leading discussions about the creative process and artistic voice were invaluable in nurturing our young artists’ own pathway and confidence in developing as artists.

Simone Darcy gave a hands-on workshop on creating alternative photographs without a camera or a darkroom. Her demonstrations lead students to use natural materials and black and white photographic chemicals to generate abstract images of light and shade. These methods are related directly to the student’s current practice in the classroom and have given additional skills and knowledge in ways that art can stretch tradition and technology.
