In Week 2 of Term 3, the Year 5 students travelled to Canberra for an unforgettable excursion packed with learning, exploration, and fun.
Over several exciting days, we visited some of Australia’s most significant cultural and historical landmarks.
Our first stop was the National Archives, where we discovered how important documents and stories from Australia’s past are preserved. Students were fascinated to see original records and learned how history is recorded and protected for future generations.
At the Canberra Zoo, we got up close to some amazing animals. From lions and tigers to cheeky monkeys, the zoo was a hit with everyone. Students particularly enjoyed learning about animal conservation and the zoo’s important breeding programs.
One of the highlights of our trip was Questacon, the National Science and Technology Centre. With hands-on exhibits, science shows, and interactive activities, students were amazed and inspired by the wonders of science.
We also had the honour of visiting the Australian War Memorial, where we paid our respects to the men and women who served our country. The students showed maturity and respect during the visit, especially during the Last Post Ceremony.
At the National Portrait Gallery, students explored portraits of influential Australians from the past and present. It was a great opportunity to think about identity, art, and the people who shape our nation.
The National Museum of Australia gave us a rich insight into Australian history and culture. One of the highlights here was the special Mr Squiggle Exhibition, which brought back memories for teachers and introduced students to this iconic character and his artistic adventures.
Finally, we visited Parliament House, where students sat in the chambers, learned about the law-making process, and even took part in a mock debate. It was an inspiring way to end our Canberra journey.
A huge thank you goes to Mr Jackman and Mrs Nicholls for their support, energy, and supervision throughout the trip. We would also like to sincerely thank John, our wonderful bus driver, for getting us everywhere safely and always with a smile.
The Canberra excursion was a fantastic experience full of learning, laughter, and memories that we will carry with us for years to come.
