From language to loaves: Year 8’s delicious journey into baking

Year 8 students eagerly set out on a culinary journey, brimming with enthusiasm. Having recently wrapped up an immersive unit on food, where they acquired a diverse range of language skills to navigate restaurants, bakeries, and markets effortlessly, they were excited to put their newfound knowledge into practice. A new challenge awaited them: embarking on the exhilarating task of baking their own baguettes.

Excitement filled the air as the students gathered ingredients. With flour dusting the countertops and laughter echoing through the room, they eagerly followed the recipe in French, each step bringing them closer to their delicious goal. The classroom buzzed with energy as they kneaded dough, shaped it into the iconic baguette form, and carefully placed it onto baking trays.

Thanks to the kind accommodation of the school’s dining staff, the students were able to use the kitchen facilities to bake their creations. The scent of freshly baked bread wafted through the halls, drawing curious glances from passing students and teachers alike.

As the golden-brown baguettes emerged from the oven, the students’ faces lit up with pride. They had succeeded in creating their own French delicacies from scratch! With a sense of accomplishment, they gathered around to sample their creations, spreading butter and jam on warm slices of bread.

The messy party may have been confined to the classroom, but it was a resounding success, nonetheless. Not only had the students honed their language skills, but they had also discovered the joy of collaboration, creativity, and of course, the simple pleasure of baking bread together.
