The Roar - Issue 10 Term 1 2025

Head of College - Mr Richard Ford

As Term 1 draws to an end this week, we look ahead to the holidays and to the first part of Term 2.

Over the Easter Weekend, families local to Bathurst are warmly invited to attend services being held at Bathurst Presbyterian Church on Good Friday (at 9:00 am) and Easter Sunday (at 9:00 am and 6:00 pm).

Toward the end of the holidays, a number of students will be involved in their local ANZAC Day events.

In Bathurst, students who would like to be involved in the ANZAC Day march are welcome to come along to Bathurst RSL with their family and are asked to wear their full formal Winter College uniform.

As we look ahead to next term, do put in your calendar some events in early May including:

Saturday 3 May: Bathurst Show, where you will be able to watch the College’s Cattle Team in action and Junior School art on display.
Sunday 4 May: Bathurst Highland Festival at the Senior School where our Pipes and Drums Band, along with our Highland Dancers, will be competing.
Thursday 8 May: Junior School Mother’s Day Breakfast.
Friday 9 May: Senior School Mother’s Day Breakfast.

Tomorrow, I look forward to seeing the Cattle Team competing at Sydney Royal and encourage Junior School families to come along on Friday afternoon for the Easter Service at 2:00 pm and the Easter Hat Parade at 2:30 pm.

I do hope that for all families, the Easter holiday period will bring with it a time of rest and reflection on Jesus, whose death for us and the certain hope that comes from Jesus’ resurrection is the reason for the holidays we are soon to enjoy

Mr Richard Ford
Head of College

Chaplain

Because Easter falls during the holidays this year, we are remembering and celebrating it in our Chapel services this week.

In the Senior School on Monday, we considered the relevance of the resurrection of Jesus today. On Friday – immediately before the Easter Hat Parade – parents are welcome to join us on the Chapel lawn as we remember what happened on that very first Easter, which is worth celebrating because Easter is about hope. And the evidence suggests we’re low on that. Several studies of recent years, including this one, observe that there has been a decline in hope (or optimism) about the future among Australian youth since 2020. It’s understandable; a quick glance at the current news headlines is enough to raise concerns for adults – let alone kids and youth. So where do we find hope? And is there a source of hope that remains constant, even when our circumstances might bring worry or despair?

The message of Easter is that there is still hope to be found. And the basis of this hope is the empty tomb of Jesus. Wait… how does an empty tomb equal hope? Here are two thoughts I shared with the Senior School this week.

  1. The empty tomb of Jesus is evidence of God’s great power. Jesus’ resurrection shows that He has claimed a victory over the world’s greatest enemy. There is nothing more powerful than Jesus; no world government crisis, no climate crisis and no personal crisis. Jesus is powerful and Jesus is alive. For those who believe, this is a source of great hope.
  2. The empty tomb of Jesus also reminds us of a great promise. The promise is that all those who put their faith in Jesus will experience the same (eternal) life after death that he did. Which means they have nothing to fear. Even the worst thing that could happen to them (in death) is nothing but a doorway into eternal joy. For those who believe, that is also a source of immense hope!

I love Easter. Sure, I love chocolate – too much, the truth be told! But I mostly love Easter because it reminds me of the amazing love of God, shown through Jesus’ death and resurrection, by which we find forgiveness and hope.

Church Services

Easter is a great time to check out a local Church service and join with our community in celebrating Easter. Here is some information on those services:

Bathurst Presbyterian Church (corner of Howick and George Streets, Bathurst)

  • Good Friday: 9:00am
  • Easter Sunday: 9:00am and 6:00pm

Bathurst Anglican Cathedral (opposite the Carilion in Kings Parade)

  • Good Friday: 8:30am and 10:00am
  • Easter Sunday: 8:30am and 10:00am

May you experience a safe, joyful and refreshing Easter break.

Year 7 Step into the Francophone World

This term, Year 7 French students were tasked with designing and constructing a visual representation of a French icon or landmark from any French-speaking country in the world.

The results were nothing short of spectacular. From the snowy ski fields of Chamonix to the elegant fashion studios of Chanel and the bustling cafés of Paris, students brought to life the rich cultural tapestry of the Francophone world. A wide variety of extraordinary dioramas were presented, showcasing not only creative construction but also careful research and thoughtful presentation.

These miniature masterpieces have sparked conversation and curiosity across the campus.

Well done, Year 7!

Book Buzz

This week, in our 3-6 lessons, we continued our novel studies. Year 3 worked on imagining their very own ‘golden phizzwizards’ and ‘trogglehumpers’ for the BFG to capture in Dream Country. Year 4 constructed Aunt Amel’s Chore Chart from ‘Huda and Me’ and Year 6 reflected on the realities of life in the trenches during World War I. Sonya Hartnett’s ‘The Silver Donkey’ provided a valuable opportunity to consider the sacrifices of our service men and women as we prepare to commemorate ANZAC Day over the Easter break.

It has been pleasing to see so many overdue books returned this week. Please make sure to check all the usual hiding places: under the bed, down the back of the couch and at the bottom of the school bag.

Don’t forget, the Premier’s Reading Challenge continues! See Mrs Mackay for guidance on how to log your reading. She will also point you in the direction of some great reads, which are part of the challenge.

Over on the senior campus, we have once again welcomed the arrival of the Year 7 French models to display in and around our shelves. From the Eiffel Tower to the French Riviera, the models are a testament to our students’ creativity. Be sure to drop by and check them out.

Just before we hop off into the Easter break to enjoy a well-earned rest and a chance to put our feet up with a book, I’d like to congratulate the following students on their winning entries in the Easter Reading competition: Adellaide Wilkinson, Hamish Spreckley and Jessica Hardie. All three received a chocolate rabbit to enjoy with their library Easter read.

Careers

Calling all parents, carers, aunties and uncles, big sisters and brothers – we need you!!
We know that the two greatest ‘human influencers’ on a student’s career journey are their parents and teachers. Parents play the most significant role in students making the big decisions in their future (environment), while schools/teachers are vital in helping students refine their choices once those big headline decisions are made and creating the opportunities to explore them (community).

The Scots All Saints College community is representative of nearly every profession you could think of, and as such, we would like to tap into this. We are asking parents/carers to give a couple of hours to participate in a Careers Colloquium (expo) to allow our students to explore different careers.

There is no public speaking involved; it is just an informal setting (tables around a hall) that allows students to walk around and talk to parents/carers about their jobs. What does the job involve? What qualifications would you need? Best part of the job, etc.

The evening will be a showcase of career options, proudly supported by parents, local businesses and professionals volunteering their time to provide students with career insights and advice.

We are hoping for a wide range of different careers to be represented. If you can spare a couple of hours on Wednesday 28 May that would be greatly appreciated. The expo will run from 6:00 pm-7:30 pm. You do not need to bring anything, but if you would like to bring material along (eg, handouts, company banner), that would be fantastic. This will also be a networking opportunity for our families and a chance, if you own a business, to promote it to the Scots All Saints community.

Please RSVP by next Friday 12 May to helen.jones@scotsallsaints.nsw.edu.au

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me on 0417 400 751.

The students will gain so much from this, and the College is continually grateful for the working partnership we have with all parents in supporting your daughters and sons.

FACTS DAY – Year 12 Friday 9 May held at CSU
All Year 12 students will be attending the FACTS (Facts about careers and tertiary studies) Day being hosted by CSU Bathurst. Students will attend a careers expo that has over 50 exhibitors registered to attend, including businesses, Tertiary providers, Government and employment agencies. This will be a fantastic opportunity for all Year 12 students to gather information firsthand. They will also attend a talk from UAC on how to apply for University, or they can choose the TAFE talk on how to apply for apprenticeships.

White Card Training
Congratulations to the 34 students who successfully gained their White Card certificates last week. The course ran over two days, and students can now safely work on construction sites and places of work that have multiple trades on site. Our presenter, Bob Hughes, commented how lovely and polite our students were and how he enjoyed working with them.

NSW MINING DINNER – Orange Ex Services Club, 3 June
These events offer outstanding opportunities to engage, learn, and gain firsthand knowledge about the exciting careers the mining industry has to offer. Whether you’re a student ready to start your career or a parent supporting your child’s ambitions, this FREE event (includes dinner) offers valuable insights into the careers in Mining

Farewell to a Family Member

The College is saying farewell to Ms Lynne Woodlock (nee Johnstone) this week as she moves further west. While Lynne will be taking up a part-time role in the College’s Community Engagement team, Lynne will be taking a step back from day to day to teaching and her leadership of Ives House.

Lynne’s family has had a connection to All Saints’ since 1903! Lynne’s father, Edward, better known as Ted, was a student at All Saints from 1949 to 1953, and his brother Frank was at the school from 1946 to 1949. Ted’s father-in-law, Thomas Murchison, attended All Saints’ from 1903 to 1907.

Ted sent all four of his children to All Saints’ as boarders from 1976 to 1992. Lynne was a boarder from 1978 to 1984 and was a prefect and Captain of Marsden House in 1984. She was a member of the Brass Band, the School Choir, and the Hockey Firsts Team and played school tennis, athletics, and cross country, as well as many other school activities. She returned as a music teacher and boarding mistress to Wade House in 1990. For the next four years, Lynne taught in the Music Department, specialising in Wind and Brass tuition. Her Senior Flute choir became especially successful, winning places at various country Eisteddfods. She left All Saints’ College to get married, but her connection to All Saints’ did not stop there as she sent her two girls as boarders, Alice and Ruby, and followed them to return as a boarding House mistress and teacher in 2016.

Other members of the Johnstone Family have been closely associated with the school over many years – brother Lloyd 1976-1982, was School Captain, and Rugby captain, brother Craig, 1980-1986, a prefect and Bean House Captain, younger brother Glenn 1985-1992, School Captain, Rugby and Cricket Captain. Lloyd’s son Luke came to All Saints’ 2015-2016.

Family connections are a large part of the school’s population, and today there are many children, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren of Old Bathurstians attending Scots All Saints College – a ‘True Family School’.
