Head of College - Mr Richard Ford

Last Saturday, as I watched several games of sport, I also had a number of conversations with parents who were still spellbound by the magical performances they had seen at Music Showcase. Congratulations to the hundreds of students involved and to the staff who supported students to reach such high standards of performance over their musical journey at the College.

It is wonderful to see so many students each week move seamlessly between their music endeavours and their chosen sporting field or court.

It is also very special to see the way in which our Pipes and Drums program supports our sport teams at home games on the weekend.

In particular, I want to acknowledge the work of the College’s Pipe Major for 2026, Grayson Jacobsen, who has consistently piped the College’s 1st XV Rugby Team onto the field over the first half of the winter season.

If you have not been along to a game at the Senior School this year, do come along this weekend and be part of the action. Games kick off at 9:00 am, and the 1st XV take to the field against St Stanislaus’ College. With this weekend being a College Rugby Alumni Day, we are hoping to see many current and past students in attendance.

Finally, if you are a past student of The Scots School (Bathurst), do start making plans to come along to a special weekend of 80-year anniversary activities on 24 – 25 October 2026. Further details are available here, and your assistance in spreading the word to past students near and far is very much appreciated.

Mr Richard Ford
Head of College

Senior School

In the last few weeks, our students have been part of a number of wonderful opportunities and initiatives that I feel are worth sharing. On Tuesday, the Year 10 music class travelled to the Junior School campus to perform a short musical for our Year 3 students. What was impressive was that under the guidance of the staff, these students had written the entire music themselves!

Yesterday, our Year 8 students had the great privilege of a ‘French Immersion’ activity in which they tasted cheese and other gourmet foods as part of their study of language and culture. Whilst not all appreciate the wonders of a blue cheese (give them time…), I am again thankful for the opportunities which are provided for our students.

A number of exciting events still remain in the short time before Term ends, including:

House Arts Festival

At the recent Music Showcase, our Director of the Arts, Ms Sargeant, quoted the musician Jacob Collier, who said: “Making music together requires you to listen deeply, value others’ perspectives, and adapt—skills that mirror how we become better humans.” Next week, we will be celebrating our annual House Arts Festival, running this year for the fourth time. In my observation, our students’ enthusiasm for the event has been growing each year, and over the last week I’ve been really impressed with the involvement, effort and willingness of our students in representing their houses. The event involves a whole-house choir performance, a small band ensemble performance, a drama, a poster and a debating competition! It has been encouraging to see students participating and serving in ways that they might not normally have experienced. At this point, I return to the words of Jacob Collier – by encouraging students to work together with others (especially in musical settings), we seek not only to produce a moving musical performance but also to further their growth and develop their character as human beings.

Historically, the House Arts Festival has been a performance after school. This year a change has been made so that all students will participate in the festival during school hours, on Thursday 25 June. It’s important that all students are present that day to help their house in this important competition.

Friday Week 10 – World Cup

On Friday 26 June, the Australian men’s soccer team (the Socceroos) will play their third match in the FIFA World Cup. Students in the Senior School will celebrate the last day of Term by watching this match live in Aikman Hall.

Uniform Reminder

As the weather cools, I am reminding students that wearing hooded jumpers underneath their College uniform is not permitted under our uniform policy. It is expected that students will layer their clothing using approved garments within the uniform policy, without the need to wear hooded jumpers, which present an untidy appearance. If your child has been in the habit of wearing non-uniform items to school, please remind them of these expectations.

NSW Public Speaking Competition

Finally, congratulations to Year 11 student Bella Starr, who recently competed in the NSW Public Speaking Competition, representing the College in Cowra. Competing against speakers from across the Central West, Bella won the competition and will proceed to the finals event, which will be held at NSW Parliament House later in the year. We wish her all the best in the next stage of this competition.

Boarding News

Ives House – Celebrating the Journey

There are many traditions we look forward to in Ives House throughout the year. From celebrating birthdays together to our themed dinners and special events, these moments help create the sense of belonging that makes boarding such a unique experience.

This week, the girls embraced our Italian-themed dinner with great enthusiasm. For one evening, we became the Italian Olympic Team. We may not have been dressed in Versace, but we certainly looked alla moda, and more importantly, we had fun. As the Italians would say, ci siamo divertiti moltissimo – we had a wonderful time.

Our house gatherings also provide an opportunity to celebrate the many achievements of the girls. We are always proud to acknowledge their efforts and successes, both in and beyond the classroom. This term, Bella won the Parliament of NSW Public Speaking Competition and now heads to Sydney, while Annabelle Webb has earned the opportunity to represent Adelaide in hockey against Malaysia. We also celebrate the ambitions of girls looking towards their futures, such as Heidi, who recently visited NIDA in Sydney as she explores pathways in the performing arts.

While the girls lead busy lives, one of our goals in Ives House is to help them understand that life is not simply about being busy. Through the Character Program, which has become an increasingly important part of life in the house this year, we encourage the girls to reflect on what truly matters. We want them to learn the value of giving their time and attention to the things that deepen their lives rather than simply fill them.

An important part of growing up is learning that challenges, mistakes and disappointments are not things to fear, but opportunities to learn. Every setback teaches courage, builds character and reminds us that we are capable of handling more than we often realise. We hope the girls leave Ives not only with academic achievements and memories of boarding life, but with a growing confidence in their own strength, judgement and ability to face life’s challenges with determination.

As Term 2 draws to a close, it is hard to believe how quickly the semester has passed. Our Year 12 students recently crossed the milestone of their final 100 days of school, a reminder that this chapter of their lives is moving steadily towards its conclusion. Next term promises to be full of exciting opportunities, including bush walks, community visits, theatre outings and many special occasions as we celebrate and farewell our Year 12 girls.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back for Term 3 and hope families will join us for our afternoon tea on the Ives lawn as students return to boarding. Until then, we wish all of our families a restful and enjoyable holiday break.

Three Little Pigs

This week, our Year 3 students were treated to a performance from our Year 10 Music students. The Year 10 music students have been writing the music and script for a children’s musical theatre production of the ‘Three Little Pigs’ with props, costumes, instrumentation etc which they have designed for 7-9 year olds.

Year 6 Science Excursion to Mt Piper Power Station

On Tuesday 23 June, Year 6 will travel to Mt Piper Power Station as part of their learning about renewable and non-renewable energy sources in Science and Technology. Students will undertake a 90-minute tour of the site and learn about electricity generation.

CIS Cross Country Carnival

We have a number of students representing Heads of Independent Coeducational Schools (HICES) at the Combined Independent Schools (CIS) Cross Country Carnival next week. Good luck to the following students: Aaliyah Minhajuddin, Annabelle Gilmer, Keiran Fingleton, Peggy Hunter, Harriet Granger, Layla Wilkinson, Jasper Spreckley, Zara Tallentire and Patrick Lenehan.

World Cup Gala Day

Next Friday 26 June, students are invited to wear their House shirt along with a splash (or even a surplus!) of green and gold as we come together to cheer on the Socceroos in their World Cup clash against Paraguay. We will be watching the match live in the Innovation Centre at midday before heading outside for an afternoon of soccer fun. Students will compete in stage-based House teams, enjoying friendly competition, teamwork, and plenty of House pride. We’re looking forward to a fun afternoon to finish Term 2, as we celebrate Australia’s World Cup journey together. Go the Socceroos!

Write On

Over recent weeks, I’ve been working with an enthusiastic group of writers 1- 2 times per week as part of the state-wide Write On Competition. Write On is an exciting opportunity for students to develop skills in writing to express their ideas in relation to a set theme. This year the theme was ‘It was a small thing, but it made a big difference.’ I was super impressed with how every student worked through the planning stages to create such diverse and creative texts. Congratulations to the following students who took part in the competition.

Year 2: Jeyan- Santosh- Ayngkaran, Harper Middleton, William Murray and Lucy Hibberson.

Year 3: Elliot Dwyer, Ava Molinari and Lilly Long, Johanan Liyana Arachchige Don, Mackenzie Reed and Norah Lesh.

Year 4: Alexander Cahyano, Evie Mason, Senaya Lankathilaka, Kataleya Engle, Spencer Ryan and Lily Vonow.

Year 5: Lexi Erickson, William Kenny, Minnah Waqar, Adelaide Long, Laurence Chen and Joya Gerges.

Year 6: Esme Hall and Isabella Munns.

Semester One Reports

On Friday 26 June, students will be bringing their Semester One student reports home. Any child absent on this day will have their report mailed to their core address. You may recall that at the start of the year, we implemented the new NSW Science and Technology and Creative Arts syllabus. As a result, these areas of the report will look slightly different to how they have looked in previous years. Both areas will commence with a summary of what your child has learnt in each area, followed by a list of Content Areas that have been assessed. Each Content Area will be graded with a level of achievement, and it is our aim that this provides you with a clearer picture of your child’s knowledge and understanding in these areas. The way we are presenting the level of achievement will also appear slightly differently from previous years; however, you will find the same description of each level inside the front cover of the report. Early in Term 3, you will have the opportunity to discuss your child’s report at Parent/ Teacher Interviews. We trust that you will find the new format informative and enjoy the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress during the interviews.

Junior School Parking

Could only parents who have children in the Preparatory School park in the Preparatory School carpark. Parents with students in Kindergarten to Year 6 should park either in the carpark beside Esrom House or the lower carpark adjacent to the bus shelter.

After School Care Enrolment Update

As part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining high-quality practices and ensuring alignment with the Education and Care Services National Law and Regulations, families wishing to utilise After School Care will shortly be required to complete a dedicated After School Care enrolment form. This form will be emailed to families during the final week of term and will assist us in ensuring we hold all information required to support the safety, wellbeing and care of children attending the service. We appreciate your support as we implement this enhanced enrolment process.

Northern Beaches Eisteddfod

Ariana Irvine and Evie Mason both performed at the Northern Beaches Eisteddfod on Sunday 14 June, after being invited back to perform in the Invitational 10 Years and Under Championship from their outstanding performances previously.

Ariana was the youngest competitor to be asked back for this invitational event and did a wonderful job, just missing an HC in this section with 90/100 marks for her performances.

Evie Mason from the entire group was placed 2nd overall in the invitational championship with an outstanding performance of both her poem “Oh Brother” and monologue “Tinkerbell.”

Prep School

Prep Waratah

Prep Waratah has had a wonderful term full of learning. This term, our Mathematics program is focusing on numbers to ten. We are learning through numeracy-related games, stories, rhymes, songs and even dances. In literacy, we have been developing our phonemic awareness and letter knowledge through a range of engaging activities.

Prep Waratah spent the first four weeks of Term 2 exploring dinosaurs as part of our STEM program. During this time, we engaged in a variety of hands-on investigations, along with art, craft, and reading non-fiction texts. Highlights of our learning included imaginative play with dinosaurs, creating salt-dough fossils, developing our own stories, and researching the causes of dinosaur extinction.

Sports

Sports Draw

This weekend, the College proudly hosts Rugby Alumni Day at the Senior Campus. It promises to be a fantastic day of rugby and community spirit, and we encourage all students, families, alumni, and supporters to come along and cheer on our teams.

The first match kicks off at 9:00 am.

To all students representing the College this weekend, we wish you the very best in your matches.

AICES Cup Netball

Congratulations to our 15s and Opens Netball teams, who proudly represented the College at the AICES Netball Cup on Wednesday 10 June, at Netball Central.

Following a series of highly competitive pool matches, both teams finished third in their respective pools before going on to claim the Division 3 Championship in outstanding fashion.

The students represented the College with pride both on and off the court and should be extremely proud of the commitment, teamwork, and sportsmanship they displayed throughout the carnival.

Rugby Representative Selections

Congratulations to Ally Gill and Lachlan Ryan on their selection in the NSW Rugby Development Squad following a successful State Championships campaign over the long weekend.

The Development teams will now travel to Adelaide to compete against representative teams from South Australia and Tasmania.

We congratulate both players on this outstanding achievement and wish them every success in the next stage of the representative season.

Director of Sport and Activities

Book Buzz

The library has joined the Junior campus in celebrating Wellbeing Week with a focus on kindness. In our K-2 lessons, we shared the gorgeous picture book What to Say When You Don’t Know What to Say by Davina Bell and illustrated by Hilary Jean Tapper. This gentle, empathetic guide helps young children navigate big emotions, social awkwardness, and new experiences using honest, kind words from the heart, and we were able to have lots of wonderful discussions about all the little ways we can be kind to one another. Year 5 also got involved, reading Paul Jennings’ short story Falling for It and taking the opportunity to appreciate the gifts and hidden talents of those around us.

It’s that time of term when we try to get all the books back on the shelves ready for borrowing after the holidays. Please take the time to look in all the usual hiding places; under the bed, in the bottom of the bag and tucked behind the lounge, and get those books back to Mrs Mackay before we all head off on a well- deserved break.

The Senior Library has been a hive of activity over the past week, playing host to House Debating elimination rounds every lunchtime. The standard of debating has been high, and it has been great to see so many of our students getting involved, thinking on their feet and supporting their peers in the quest for House glory. Finals berths will be determined early next week, and we eagerly await the final battle for debating supremacy on House Arts Festival Day.

Our Notables

Both All Saints’ College and Marsden School for Girls have had some high-achieving alumni in their histories. The OBU museum has a collection of photos and details of many of these people, some dating back to the very beginning of the school’s foundation.

One of the first notables we have a record of is the Hon. Sir Charles Gregory Wade, who was one of the first three boys of All Saints’ opening day, 27th January 1874. Wade, from his first entrance until his departure in 1876, ‘displayed a faculty of leadership.’ After graduating from Oxford University, he returned to Sydney to the local Bar, was the Crown Prosecutor from 1891 to 1902 and entered politics in 1903. He became Premier of NSW in 1907 until his party was defeated in 1910.

As Premier, his Cabinet was responsible for the inauguration of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Scheme, amendments to the Neglected Children’s Act, the Betting and Gaming Laws and several other social reforms. His courage, high aims, and the outstanding cleanness of his politics earned the respect of all parties. He remained leader of the Opposition until 1916, was appointed Agent General in London in 1917, then returned to NSW to become a judge of the Supreme Court.

In addition to his political, judicial and scholastic achievements, he was an outstanding athlete, excelling in many branches of sport. As a rugby footballer, he shone, and as a schoolboy, he played with the famous Wallaroo team. He also won great distinction while at Oxford University and in England, playing for both University and the English Team. He excelled in other sports, cricket, tennis and was an expert rifleman.

In 1918, he was created a Knight Bachelor, and in 1920, he was made K.C.M.G. In recognition of his services to Belgian refugees, he was invested personally by the King of Belgium with the Cross Commander of the Belgian Order of the Crown and received an Italian decoration.

He died suddenly September 1922 and was accorded a State funeral at which the Archbishop of Sydney delivered the oration and Chief Justice Sir William Cullen bore testimony to his merits in these words, “never was there a more loyal colleague he was far more than a lawyer and a judge; he was one who sincerely devoted himself to accomplishing the best work of which he is capable of for his native country.”

In the first official History of All Saints’ College, Bathurst 1873-1963, Chapter 111, The First Headmaster- Henry Kemmis 1874-1877, the first of the seven boys to present themselves to the gates and be enrolled were two Wade brothers and Sloman. It is recorded in the same chapter that public examinations in those days were conducted under the authority of the University of Sydney, and the first All Saints’ boys to pass were T.B.U. Sloman, A. Tanner and C.G. Wade.
