Year 8 French Day – A Celebration of French Culture, Food and Fun

What a wonderful way to celebrate the end of the semester – with a day filled with French finesse, flavour and flair!

On Wednesday, our Year 8 students were transported to France as they took part in a special French Immersion Day designed to bring language and culture to life. The day provided students with a unique opportunity to experience one of France’s most famous culinary traditions – cheese!

Throughout the day, each Year 8 class enjoyed a French cheese tasting experience featuring four authentic cheeses sourced from Le Petit Marché in Newport. Thanks to the generosity and expertise of the team at Le Petit Marché, students were given a genuine taste of French culture and cuisine, turning an ordinary lesson into a rich and memorable cultural experience.

As they sampled each cheese, students were encouraged to engage all their senses, considering its appearance, aroma, texture and flavour. From soft, creamy varieties to more robust and distinctive cheeses, the tasting sparked lively conversation, curiosity and plenty of laughter. Many students were surprised by the remarkable diversity of French cheeses, discovering flavours and textures far beyond the familiar cheeses they encounter at home.

The tasting sessions were accompanied by presentations exploring the rich history of French cheesemaking, the regions from which the cheeses originated, and the important role cheese plays in French culture. Students learned that France produces well over a thousand different varieties of cheese, with each region proudly celebrating its own unique traditions and flavours.

Following the tastings, students gathered outside to enjoy a delightful French morning tea. Bathed in glorious winter sunshine, they relaxed with their friends while French music drifted through the air, creating the atmosphere of a bustling village market or a sunny Parisian café. For a little while, it felt as though we had stepped out of Bathurst and into the heart of France

As the semester draws to a close, French Day was a fitting celebration of all that our Year 8 students have achieved. It was a day filled with laughter, learning, conversation and discovery – a true celebration of the French language and culture.

Quelle magnifique journée française!
