Head of College - Mr Richard Ford

It was lovely to have Kindergarten visit the Senior School Farm this week to connect with some of the animals there, including newly born lambs and hatched chicks.

Tomorrow, Year 12 students who started their journey with us in Prekindergarten will head to the Junior School assembly and be presented with special awards by Kindergarten, and share a few memories.

Senior School students on Monday were fortunate to hear from past student Stuart Andrews, who helped students think about how to read a landscape, understand the patterns and processes that make landscapes function and use that knowledge to reinstate their natural function.

On the same day, students heard adventure and businessman John Zeckendorf share about his life and faith. A few people have asked whether the interview with John was recorded, and while it was not, an interview with John can be found here.

This weekend, please consider dropping into one of the Grand Final games on Saturday to support teams who have made it through. Hockey 1sts hit off at 8:30 am. Then there are three Grand Finals on at 9:00 am, with 12 Red Football playing at Proctor Park and 16 Gold, 16 Red playing at Bathurst Netball Courts. Later in the day, at 1:00 pm, 2nds Netball will play at Bathurst Netball Courts. Good luck to these teams and all students playing this weekend.

Next week is a particularly special week for Year 12 as it marks their final days of formal classes. We look forward to many special moments together with students and parents. While much work for Year 12 still lies ahead of them, it will be good to stop and reflect with gratitude on their time at the College.

Most Year 12 parents I speak to at the moment cannot believe that their little girl or boy has grown up so quickly. While no doubt at times the journey seemed long, there is a way in which you blink and children are all grown up. This reality is a good reminder to all of us to cherish every moment and make precious memories together while we can.

Crazy, Colourful Accessory Day
This Friday, our SRC are coordinating a fundraiser to support our efforts to purchase a chilled and filtered water fountain and to support the various cancer-related charities of the Cancer Council.

The mufti challenge is for our students to ‘Accessorise’. That means wear crazy or colourful socks, ties, scarves, hats (outside of the classroom use only), earrings, etc. Students can choose any colour they like, and the cost is just $2 per student. Students must continue to wear their normal school uniform, just accessorise it! In Term 4, we will have a Full Mufti Day.

Please note that students who will be attending or receiving an award at the Winter Sports Assembly will need to de-accessorise and wear their full school uniform to the assembly. Students are asked to please have their $2 cash or their physical debit card to give to the SRC members as they come around to collect during classes on Friday.

Year 5 Discover High School Day
It was a pleasure to welcome the 75 plus Year 5 students to the Senior School Campus last Friday. The students were given the opportunity to get to know other students considering high school with us and discover the campus, as well as some of the types of classes they could experience as high school students. Lessons in Mathematics focused on the power of Pi and collected statistics regarding student heights to add to Excel programs. In History, the students learnt interesting facts about many and diverse periods throughout time, from the Egyptians, Aztecs, Vikings, Romans and Persians. The students also got creative and used specialised programs and machines to create personalised key rings in Design and Technology. We thank and applaud our Year 10 student helpers for assisting on the day and express our gratitude to the amazing staff who prepared and delivered the lessons.

Tree Group
Our College TREE – Team for Restoration, Ecology & Environment Group had their first full afternoon of labour on Wednesday. After initial planning sessions, the arrival of the resources gave the team a chance to start the first project, which was installing tree rings to protect the trees going toward the Ag Centre. The students assembled 13 rings, then added manure sourced from our equestrian centre. Our final job will be to add the bark mulch. We hope that as our trees awaken from their winter slumber that they grow healthily and strongly. Any student wanting to join our group is welcome to. It is a good voluntary initiative for the Duke of Edinburgh for those involved or looking to get involved with it. Our project in Term 4 will branch off to preparing sites for tree planting next Autumn, a worm farm project, posters for classrooms reminding people to conserve energy and recycling initiatives.

End of Term 3
Next week is our last week of Term 3. It will be an exciting week of celebration for our Year 12 students. We urge them to enjoy their week, celebrate safely and respectfully. We look forward to the informal events (Year 12 Chapel and Assembly on Monday and Tuesday and the formal events next Thursday (Valedictory Assembly) and Friday (Valedictory Dinner). We congratulate the many Year 12 students who have already received university offers and strongly encourage our Year 12 students to increase their study and put the maximum amount of effort into their HSC Examinations next term.

We also remind our parents/carers of Year 7–11 students that in Term 4, we move to the summer school uniform. Therefore, broad-brimmed hats will be needed for use at school each and every day. Please have these ready for the first day of term.

Au Revoir Year 12 – A Special Bonjour Bathurst Milestone

This week, Bonjour Bathurst celebrated a very special moment as we farewelled our Year 12 students through our latest episode. This group holds a unique place in the history of the program, as they were part of the very first Bonjour Bathurst stories ever filmed.

In this farewell episode, the Year 12 students speak about their dreams and plans for the future. From travel and study to career aspirations, their responses are filled with hope and excitement for what lies ahead.

As they take their next steps, we thank them for the energy, humour, and enthusiasm they have brought to both the classroom and Bonjour Bathurst. We wish them every success as they embark on this new chapter, and we look forward to continuing to tell the stories of our amazing French students for many years to come.

Prep School

Prep Banksia

Prep Banksia have enjoyed another wonderful term of fun and learning.

We have been preparing our artwork of Aladdin’s carpet, ready for Term 4’s musical. We have had fun exploring letters through artwork and play. We have made watermelons, taken worms out walking in alphabetical order, made our own vacuum cleaners and safety vests. It is exciting to see the class thriving on routines, working together collaboratively and excited for learning.

Sports

On Tuesday 16 September, we had 50 students represent the College at the ISA Athletics Carnival. It was a massive but extremely successful day, and thank you to all parents and staff who helped make it possible. A special mention to Ashley Mullins, who broke the 17-year-old girls’ record in the Discus with a throw of 39.66m. Congratulations to the following students who have been selected for the ISA Athletics team to compete at NSWCIS on Tuesday 23 September.

Zoe-Grayce Boss-Walker, Juliet Erickson, Nellie Grant, Hannah McKenzie, Paige Moffitt, Olive Moppett, Ashley Mullins, Emily Tallentire, Lucy Tallentire, Charlotte Yates, Angus Argent-Smith, Drew Barnett, Kynan Denness, Lachlan Hooper, Joe Jeffress, Baxter Killiby, Benjamin Lenehan, Matias Ruidiaz, Zephir Valsain.

On Wednesday 17 September, the Senior School ran a Fast 5 Netball Tournament with 11 teams competing across three age groups. It was a lively, competitive, and incredibly fun event for students and staff alike.

Book Buzz

This week on the Junior campus in our K-3 lessons, we explored the value of playing sport and practising teamwork, sharing beautiful picture books from Michael Wagner, Lydia Williams and Paul Seden. Meanwhile, Year 5 took the opportunity to explore the genre quiz taken by their peers last week. There was much food for thought about reading habits and promises to stop and consider alternative genres when browsing the shelves.

A reminder to parents that the Premier’s Reading Challenge closes soon on the 19 September. All entries must be submitted by this date. Certificates will be given to students at the end of the school year.

Please note that the Scholastic Book Club closed on 12 September. We are hoping that orders will arrive before the end of term and will endeavour to deliver orders to the students in time for the holidays.

Over on the Senior campus, the library has been a hive of activity with Year 12 making the most of the last weeks of official schooling to build on their Trial exam marks and our Year 11s utilising the library study spaces to prepare for their Preliminary examinations.

Providing a pleasing backdrop to this studious activity are the impressive artworks produced by Year 8 and 9. We have enjoyed viewing the exhibition of the creative ceramic skulls from Year 8 over the last month and are now lucky enough to be able to enjoy the fruits of Year 9’s artistic endeavours. Be sure to stop by and take a look next time you are in the library.

The Tunnels Under the Scots Campus

This article has been prompted by a visit to the Archives this week by a group of Year 10 students who were interested in the legend of The Tunnel.

The legend goes back at least three generations. The story is that there is a tunnel under the main Quad leading from the cupboard under the stairs in “Karralee” to the cleaners’ storage area in the Stable Block. The legend does not run to who built the tunnel or why.

Mr Maher began to investigate the story many years ago when former Maintenance and Grounds Supervisor Geoff Bromfield had to go under the floor of “Karralee” in order to repair something. This is where the facts start to get in the way of a good story! He was asked to report on any tunnel-like structures, but could find no evidence of any. In 2021, the floor under the stairs and nearby rooms was lifted, and a large quantity of soil was removed to deal with rising damp. Again, no evidence of a tunnel emerged. In 2023, the other end of the claimed tunnel was examined when the floor in one of the downstairs classrooms was replaced, and large quantities of soil were removed from below it. Again, no sign was found of a tunnel.

So, what might be the origin of this story? As it happens, it could have a factual basis, but the tale has been romanticised, as often happens with school stories. The “Karralee Boys” who were here during World War II report that an early task that they were assigned to was to dig a slit trench. This was a narrow trench dug into the ground into which people could throw themselves for protection in the event of a bombing raid. They were not completely safe, but provided some protection against lateral shockwaves from an explosion and flying debris. They were a common air raid precaution in schools during wartime. According to Tim Hector, the trench spent most of the war as an unofficial water storage. Luckily, enemy bombers never came within range of Bathurst. At the end of hostilities in 1945, the trench was backfilled. The site is beneath what is now the staff room on the Senior Campus.

Year 10 students study the effect of World War II on a local community. The questions about The Tunnel followed on from discussions with the Archivist about that topic.
