The Roar - Issue 36 Term 4 2025

Contents

Head of College - Mr Richard Ford

A fortnight ago, in The Roar, I shared that 2026 would bring with it some changes to our parent communication systems. We hope that these developments will mean parents have a better “one stop shop” for key information that relates to their child.

The journey we are on with College systems is partly the result of Operoo no longer being supported in Australian schools beyond the end of this year. More broadly, for some time now, the College has been wanting to move ahead with providing parents with a way to access key information about their child on the go.

This afternoon, the College will provide parents and carers with access to a new system, Edumate.

Edumate is the College’s student information system, and parents will be able to access key information relevant to their child through the Edumate CarerOrbit App.

The Edumate CarerOrbit App is a mobile-friendly application that parents will download to their mobile, and from here they will be able to view key student information.

Parents will also be given access to the Edumate Web Portal. The Edumate Web Portal will primarily be used by parents when they need to input information, either contact information or medical information, as entering these details is not possible from the Edumate CarerOrbit App and needs to be done through a web browser.

Parents will receive an email this afternoon at the email address they have registered with the College.

This email will contain details on where to access the Edumate web portal and Edumate CarerOrbit App, along with how to login to each.

Please note that when downloading the CarerOrbit App to your smartphone, the College code to enter is SASC.

This early introduction to Edumate will provide an opportunity for parents and carers to become familiar with its functionality prior to the new year.

Should you wish to check or update the email address you have registered with the College to ensure you receive communication, please send an email directly to connect@scotsallsaints.nsw.edu.au, noting your preferred email address.

Resources have been developed to support parents and carers to locate, login and use the new tools. This information can be found here https://scotsallsaints.nsw.edu.au/parent-portal/parent-communication-app/

Over the summer holidays, staff will also be learning more about the Edumate CarerOrbit App ahead of the new year.

We hope that as different aspects of Edumate are progressively rolled out in 2026 that they are a helpful support to our partnership with parents and carers in the education of the students at the College.

Christmas Hamper Packing

This week, it was wonderful to see some Year 8 and Year 9 students assisting with the packing of 650 Christmas hampers, which will be delivered to families in our community this Christmas. The students were so efficient that, sadly, the work was completed before all classes had an opportunity to be involved. Thankfully, many more opportunities continue to arise for our students to be involved in serving others.

As well as packing hampers, the students had a chance to listen to a representative from Hope Care who shared about some of the challenges facing some individuals and families around our area, and the various initiatives underway which seek to provide food, assistance, connection and hope for those in need. Not only were the students amazed that the entire Christmas Hamper program occurs without government funding, but they were also impressed by the generosity of so many groups that make the hampers possible.

Thank you again to all those who contributed chocolates for the hampers, and to the many Junior School students who produced beautiful handwritten and drawn cards which were included in these packages.

Carols on the Green

On Friday night, we’d love to see you at the Carols on the Green service on the Junior School campus at 5:15 pm. Students have been preparing some wonderful Christmas music. Please bring along a rug, some food, family and friends, to celebrate Christmas, music, the end of the year, and the birth of Jesus together. It promises to be a wonderful night.

End of Year Celebrations
Next week, our final week for students this year has two special days that we are looking forward to. Spirit Day will be held on the Senior School campus on Thursday 4 December, and students from Years 3 to 11 will have the chance to enjoy the fun-filled activities together.

A team of senior school staff have been collaborating and planning activities and challenges for the students to do together. These include activities in the ‘Water Zone’ where students may get a little wet, but there is no need for Junior School students to bring swimwear or towels. Other Zones include a ‘Creative Zone’ for the students to prepare some Christmas Decorations, the ‘Dance Zone’ for everyone to bust some moves, the ‘Brain Zone’ for some trivia and puzzles and the ‘Games Zone’ for plenty of teamwork and fun.

Students will be required to be dressed in the Sports Uniform with House Shirts and bring their recess and a water bottle. A BBQ lunch will be supplied for all students. Senior school students are encouraged to have swimwear and a towel, as during the last part of the day, the students will be able to join in a water slide, water fight and swim in the pool. We expect that all Senior School students will attend school on this last day and also attend Celebration Day at CSU on Friday 5 December.

CAFÉ Closing
Please be aware that Wednesday 3 December will be the last day of operation for purchases at the Café over the counter or Flexischool Orders. It will not be open on Spirit Day.

Thanks and well wishes
With this being the last of my Roar reports for 2025, I wish to thank the students, teachers and parents for everything they have been involved with and supportive of over the 2025 school year. We have much to be thankful for and proud of. It has been a great privilege to witness on a daily basis the growth and development of our students, whether this be academically, socially or through the many co-curricular or service opportunities extended to the students.

Like all schools, there may have been some challenges or hurdles that popped up throughout the year. We are pleased that by working together and supporting one another, we have been able to overcome them. May the break over Christmas, New Year and in January be one that is safe, happy, relaxing and filled with joy.

Book Buzz

This week, over on the Junior campus, in our library lessons, we started to get excited for our summer holidays, sharing the picture books “Why I Love Summer” by Michael Wagner and Tom Jellett and “Greetings from Sandy Beach” by Bob Graham. It was fun to compare our summer traditions, and it seems many of us are looking forward to games of backyard cricket followed by the time-honoured tradition ‘ice cream o’clock’.

A reminder that Mrs Mackay will be away for the remainder of the term. Mrs Gilmore will be helping out in the library in her absence. We thank her for so ably stepping in to keep the library running smoothly.

It’s that time of year when all our books need to find their way back to the shelves. There will be no borrowing for the final two weeks of term, and we ask that all students check at home and in their bags for any overdue books. Please return them to Mrs Davis or Mrs Gilmore before the end of the term. Notices will be sent home in diaries of students with overdue books.

Over on the Senior campus, in our Year 7 library lessons, we also dipped into the joys of summer. We looked to classic and contemporary literature to explore how the Australian summer has been portrayed on the page. We finished our lessons with a collaborative description of a quintessential Australian summer.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas, may you unwrap many books and spend your summer reading.

From The Archives

Last week marked a special birthday for Colin Davidson, who was a student of The Scots College Branch School in its last year and a Foundation Student of Scots School Bathurst in 1946.

Colin hailed from Cessnock. Like many children of his age, his father was away at World War II, and it was decided that he should go to boarding school. With the war on, The Scots College had evacuated its Junior School to the Branch School in Bathurst, and it was there that Colin was sent in 1945 as a Year 5 boarder. His family agreed that he should stay on another year in 1946, to make up the numbers for Scots School Bathurst. The Museum collection includes a cup he won in 1946 as the 11-year-old Athletics Champion.

In 1947, Colin went to Scots in Sydney from where he matriculated, moving on to do a law degree at Sydney University. He had a fine legal career, ending up as a Judge of the Compensation Court.

Even 80 years after his schooling in Bathurst, Colin continues to be very interested in the progress of the campus he attended. He has been involved in quite a number of events over the years that have brought together the Scots past student community. He is still the Patron of The Scots School Old Boys and Girls Association. Colin was involved in the Early Years Reunion in 1994. Stephen Marshall, who did a great deal of work to organise the Scots 50th Jubilee Celebrations in 1996, spoke recently to the Headmaster and Mr Maher about the encouragement that he received from Colin in organising a large-scale event that included steam train 3801, and a Vice-Regal visit.

Since 1996, he has continued to attend the school as a Speech Day guest and an attendee at reunions of “The Karralee Boys”.

We wish Colin all the best for his 90th birthday.
