Students shine in Australian Geography Competition

Geography students tested their geographical skills and knowledge against students from all around Australia in the 2023 Australian Geography Competition.

Geography teacher Mr Gillmer said he had recently received the results and was pleased with how students had performed.

“We have several student geographers at our school who performed very well in the competition this year with two standout results from Angus Dowton (Year 10) and Stirling Miller (Year 9) in the top 1% in their year level across Australia,” Mr Gillmer said.

“From the 50 students competing, we had four students awarded high distinctions, five distinctions and 11 credits.”

Nearly 70,000 students from across Australia entered the Australian Geography Competition. These results give the College an external benchmark as to how our students are going in certain aspects of geography.

The competition aims to encourage student interest in geography and to reward student excellence. Geography is such an important subject because it brings together the physical and human dimensions of our environment, helping students to develop a deeper understanding of our world and the challenges it faces.

The Competition is a joint initiative of the Australian Geography Teachers’ Association and the Royal Geographical Society of Queensland. Funding to support the Competition is provided by the Australian Department of Education, Skills and Employment, the University of Melbourne, and the University of New South Wales.
