Head of College - Mr Richard Ford

Best wishes to the College’s da Vinci Decathlon teams as they head to Sydney this coming week to represent the Central West at the State level. In the Central West region, Scots All Saints College was the highest performing school with teams winning in Year 8, Year 9 and Year 10. I am confident all teams from the College will represent us with distinction in Sydney.

This afternoon, I will be heading to Condobolin to catch up with families before heading to Dubbo for the Boarding Schools Expo on Friday and Saturday. If you are in these areas, please drop in or encourage families in the areas to connect. More information about the various gatherings can be found here.

Students, parents and grandparents who love their Science are reminded that next Tuesday at lunch, Professor Frank Nicholas will be with us for a Leadership Lunch in which he will share about the leading working he has undertaken over several decades in the area of animal genetics. Please register here.

Next Friday, the College’s annual Battle of the Bands is on, and student bands are hard at work preparing to lift the roof off Aikman Hall and have some fun. Battle of the Bands is always a terrific night, and I encourage you to come along and support these incredibly brave and talented students.

Senior School

Mother’s Day Morning
We thank the mothers and motherly figures who came to the College for our Mother’s Day Gratitude Morning. We thank the students and staff who led, performed, prayed or recited poetry. We hope that all of our students were able to express their appreciation and love for their mothers last weekend.

Summer Sports Awards
We congratulate all the students who received recognition for their achievements, dedication, skills and success over the summer sports season. We thank Mr McClintock for his work coordinating the Summer Sports Awards ceremony last Friday afternoon, and thank the parents and students who supported the event. It is the first time that we have held this ceremony in this way, and we look forward to it being a regular event on our future calendars.

Consent Lab Presentations
On Monday 26 May, we welcome the team from Consent Labs (a not-for-profit organisation) to deliver presentations to the students in Years 7 to 9 about topics surrounding consent and respectful relationships. We, as a school, believe that these educational sessions are important in providing our students with the knowledge to empower themselves in understanding their rights and to be fully informed about what resources are available to them if necessary. As acknowledged in many of the learning, Christian and wellbeing programs at the College, we reiterate to the students that every young person deserves to be safe and respected in relationships.

Supporting the Consent Lab presentations, we have also invited the local Police Youth Officers to come to talk to each of our Year groups this term. The Officers will give informative talks regarding some of the topical issues that some young people face, including online relationships and behaviours, vaping, alcohol use, partying, assault, bullying and the possible legal implications for young people involved with these issues.

Aerosols, Perfumes and Colognes
At our most recent assembly, Ms Shanahan spoke to the students regarding the use and sometimes apparent overuse of deodorants, perfumes and colognes. Whilst we appreciate that we want our students to smell pleasant, we do, however, need to remind them that there are many people who are sensitive to overpowering smells, which can trigger medical issues such as asthma attacks. Ms Shanahan reminded students that spraying aerosols and deodorants at school is banned and that students do not need to use lather themselves with extra perfumes or colognes before coming to school. Roll-on or stick deodorants are encouraged for those who need to apply at school, perhaps after physical activity. We thank our students for cooperating with these expectations.

Pick Up and Drop Off Area
We remind our parents and carers of the advice regarding the pick-up and drop-off of students. We thank the majority of parents who follow this safety rule and remind those who may have forgotten or are unfamiliar with the road safety rules on the Senior Campus. Below is an extract from the Senior School Handbook.

Book Buzz

Another busy week in the library across both campuses. In our K-2 lessons, we focused on finding a moment of quiet in all the chaos of school and family life. We read ‘Nice and Slow’ by Sarah Ayoub and ‘The Sloth Who Came to Stay’ by Margaret Wild’. We discussed what our perfect ‘Sloth Day’ would look like as we considered the importance of taking a break and recharging our batteries with the people we love.

Meanwhile, 5W began their spotlight on R.J. Palacio’s novel ‘Wonder’ with a discussion of our perception of ourselves and others. Some interesting themes emerged, and we look forward to continuing our exploration of these ideas.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge is in full swing. Keep reading and recording those books, and see Mrs Mackay if you have any questions.

Scholastic Book Club orders are due back to Mrs Mackay by 19 May.

National Simultaneous Storytime is coming up next Wednesday, where our students P-2 will pause during their lessons to share the same story at the same time as many other students around the nation. This year’s story is ‘The Truck Cat’ by Deborah Frenkel. Keep your eyes peeled for all the cat-themed books and a few cats in trucks popping up around the library as Mrs. Mackay gets in on the excitement.

Last week, the senior campus library hosted the final Round 2 HICES debates. Our Year 7 team of Evie Johnston, Claire Corkhill, Eleanor Guihot, Holly Wykes and Gabrielle Price tackled The Illawarra Grammar School, arguing the negative case for every school having an electronic waste recycling centre. The debate was hard fought, and we were unlucky to come away without a victory.

Year 8 HICES debating team

Our Year 8 team of Alexander Clements, Emmeline Jacobsen, Oliver Cumming, Amelia Kirby, Clara Klootwijk and Benjamin Lenehan prepared the negative case that all homework should be abolished and were ready to face our opposition from St Spyridon College. Unfortunately, St Spyridon forfeited on the day of the debate, meaning we were unable to test our mettle this time around. We do, however, take the points and head into Round 3 without a loss.

Year 9 HICES debating team

In the impromptu debates, our Year 9 team of Kent Wilkinson, Liam Erickson, Georgia Rennie and Cleo Bailey argued in the affirmative for the barring of explicit criticism of opponents during political campaigns. Our case was well organised and thoughtfully constructed, but we were ultimately unable to best our opponents, Macquarie Anglican Grammar School.

Year 11 HICES debating team

Finally, our Year 11 team, comprising Grayson Jacobsen, Olivia Mills, Jake Robinson and Siddharth Pottapenjara, argued in the affirmative that the families of victims of violent crimes should help set the sentence of perpetrators. Some impressive general knowledge was on display in this debate, and we were unlucky to go down in a tight tussle to our opposition from Penrith Anglican College.

We move now to Round 3 and wish our debaters all the best for their next debate.

Finally, don’t forget Bathurst will once again be holding the Bathurst Writers’ and Readers’ Festival next week from 21-25 May. This year, the festival celebrates its tenth anniversary. A Brief History of Rugby at All Saints’

From the very beginning of the school’s history, Rugby was played, although the opportunity for sport of any kind was limited by a lack of space. “Before removing to the College premises, there was no sports ground,” wrote an old boy, ”we used to play football in Mr Kemmis’ back yard, but for serious practice we went to the Bathurst Cricket Ground, and we had a good football team in the early days.”

After the occupation of the new building in 1875, the playground adjoining being sufficiently large for practice, sport began to play an inseparable part in school life. St Stanislaus’ College, which had opened in September 1873, just four months before All Saints’, has been a constant competitor in the field of sport, particularly Rugby. A general spirit of rivalry became a permanent factor, exercising a very beneficial influence on both schools.

Under the second Headmaster Edwin Bean, the school games were played on the opposing team’s ground or else on a distant playing field on the racecourse. Chief rivals were St Stanislaus’, Cooerwull, and occasionally Sydney Schools, as up until the Great War, All Saints’ was a member of the Great Public Schools’ Association.

When the College reopened at Esrom in 1923, a splendid site was again available for sports, but this required levelling. The Memorial Playing Field, now named Watson Oval, was established as a tribute from the Old Boys to those of their number who fell in the Great War. W. J. Kell, an Old Boy, voluntarily supervised the construction of this fine sports ground, paid for by subscriptions from the Old Boys. The idea was to provide a ground on which young Australians should learn to “play the game” in the same spirit as on the battlefields of the Great War. A plaque bearing an inscription to that effect has been attached to the entrance through which the players pass on to the ground.

After the Second World War, enlistments and War Work affected the district. Union Competition and All Saints’ had to play against Sydney Schools until some of the Western Towns started Union Teams. The school, in particular Mr McLeod, acted as missionaries for the game. After Orange and Cowra began to play, a Western Rugby Union was formed and affiliated with the NSWRU, the Headmaster Rev. Watson being the first president.

There were many first-class Rugby players from the school over its history, representing Australia, New South Wales or both. Others represented in the Western District or the Australian Schoolboy Competitions. One of the most recent international players recorded here is Scott Staniforth, who captained Rugby at the school in 1995, became a NSW State and then an Australian National representative player.

Rugby has had wins and losses over the school’s 150 years, from the First XV of 1875 to the First XV of 2017. Some of the victorious teams have been the 1956 Joint-Premiers of 1956 captained by David Hawker and coached by Mr Albert Emms; the Premiers of 1978 captained by Stephen Konecny and coached by Mr Bruce Clydsdale; the 1989 Premiers captained by Alexander Terry and coached by Mr Rob King; and the 1999 WAS premiers beating St Stanislaus’ 24-14 captained by Nigel Staniforth and coached by Mr Steve Croft.

In 2012, the First XV became undefeated Minor Premiers in the ISA competition for the first time. In the Grand Final, the premiership decider, the First XV lost to Redfield in the rematch 23-12. Jock Suttor the captain and Mr Scott Gardner coach, assisted by Peter O’Neill and Marcus Croft were managers of this outstanding team. Rugby at All Saints’ would not have survived without the passion, skills and encouragement of the many coaches, managers, parents, patrons and friends of All Saints’ Rugby.
