Head of College - Mr Richard Ford

With Book Week just around the corner, many students and staff are starting to consider this year’s theme, “Book an Adventure!”. Junior School students always astound me with their creativity, and I look forward to seeing them on parade on the afternoon of 21 August. In line with the theme of adventure, Senior School students can look forward to some areas of the library being turned into adventure-inspired escape rooms for the week, along with other special activities.

Speaking of books, one of our past students, Daniel McKay is to be congratulated on his recent publication of a quirky A-Z compendium called Whimwondery. Daniel’s book is full of magical illustrations and tall tales, which are a fun read for young and old alike. You can pick up a copy at the bookstore in Bathurst or online. We appreciate Daniel visiting to speak to History Extension students two years ago and look forward to welcoming him back again when he can take some time out from his teaching and research at Cambridge University.

This week, members of the Cattle Team have been representing the College at EKKA (Brisbane Show) and have already taken out Reserve Champion Trade Heifer and Reserve Champion Junior Steer, with more results to come. Congratulations to all involved, and thank you to Mrs Dawes for organising this opportunity. Next week, the Sheep Team heads to Dubbo for the Merino Weather Challenge, and we wish them well for this competition and thank Ms Earney for her support of the students involved.

Looking ahead, Father’s Day is only a month away and shortly information will be coming out about two events, the first of which is for Prep and Kindy on the morning of Thursday 4 September and the second of which is for Senior School on the morning of Friday 5 September.

In the last few weeks, the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child has been launched. Some Year 5 students shared with all K-6 students on Wednesday the joy and kindness that sharing one small shoebox of gifts can bring.

Next Monday, Year 7 will similarly share about the project with the Senior School. Students in Year 5 and Year 7 wellbeing classes will be busily collecting items to pack and ship through Samaritan’s Purse, which will be warmly received by children in far less-privileged parts of the world. Year 7 students will also be running bake sales throughout the term to raise the money required for postage of the boxes, and they look forward to the support of their peers through purchasing items at those stalls.

It’s a wonderful project for us to champion as a school, given that it’s a visible outworking of our value of compassion. It’s not that we want our children to feel guilt for the blessings they enjoy, having been born into very fortunate circumstances. Rather, we hope that they learn the importance of using those blessings for the good of those less fortunate.

Contrary to what many people understand, this is at the heart of what Jesus taught; not that we earn God’s approval by doing impressive things, but that we respond to God’s grace by living in a way that honours Him.

Students across the College will be invited to pack shoeboxes in their own families, to add to those being packed at the College. Please consider whether your family might like to contribute to doing so. For more information on the project and what’s involved, click here.

Year 12 Trial HSC Examinations
We extend our best wishes to Year 12 for their Trial HSC Examinations. Some students have already ‘knocked over’ their exams due to the practical nature of the subject or the pattern of study that they are doing. We remind the students in Years 7 – 11 to be very quiet and respectful to the students who will be doing their examinations in the Bulkeley House Exam Centre. We are thankful that our Presiding Officer, Mrs Ros King, will be supervising the examination with the support of our teachers to try and make the experience as similar to the HSC Examinations as possible.

The Resilience Project at Home
Over recent and upcoming weeks, our students will have had wellbeing lessons focused on the Empathy pillar of The Resilience Project program. Empathy is about understanding others’ feelings and perspectives and being kind to others. In Year 9 and 11 classes, we have explored and challenged concepts such as ‘being rich or having lots of material possessions will make us happy’. The students have also learnt about the science and effect of how intentionally being kind to others actually makes not only the recipient of the kindness feel happier, but it also makes the person being kind feel happier! Students have also learnt about the acronym of ACT when dealing with challenges by Acknowledging the challenge, being a Companion by actively listening to others and talking with them.

This strategy helps support and empathise with one another during difficult times. Another focus across many of our year groups at present is creating connections with others. There are many opportunities for students to do this at Scots All Saints, and we encourage and support students to be able to develop these important life skills.

We invite our parents and carers to try to extend our students’ learning of Empathy at home with the TRP@Home activity below.

Yachio Shoin (Japan) Visit
Mrs Denise Nelson and Year 10 students are preparing for the visit from Yachio Shoin on 20 August. Their school has 41 students coming, and we have a range of activities and classes for their students and our students to participate in. We thank the team of people assisting with the program and for welcoming our guests. We are very grateful for the relationship that we have with the school and the opportunity for our students to create connections with students from another country, and we look forward to visiting them in October with 37 students of our own.

Next week we will celebrate National Science Week. National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology, and thousands of individuals – from students to scientists to chefs and musicians – get involved, taking part in science events across the nation.

The 2025 school theme is Decoding the Universe – Exploring the unknown with nature’s hidden language. Such a theme aims to focus on the mysteries of the Universe by exploring the fundamental languages of nature. Next week in STEM, Mr Roohan will unpack this theme with all of his classes.

Student Representative Council
Our new SRC members for this semester will receive their badges at the assembly next week, Friday 14 August. Parents are encouraged to attend.

Book Week
This year, Book Week will be celebrated in Week 5.

Our Book Parade and Book Fair will be held on Thursday 21 August. All Junior school children are invited to dress up as their favourite book character and join in the fun. The parade will commence at 2:30 pm behind the Junior school library, around the path to the Innovation Centre. A reminder to students that weapons (swords, guns, etc) are not to form part of any costume.

The Scholastic Book Fair will be held in the Junior Library on the same afternoon. The Book Fair will be open to Prep and Kindergarten students and parents at 1:30 pm. Parents may collect their child from their classroom and head to the Book Fair at this time. Students in Years 1 and 2 are invited to the Book Fair at 2:00 pm and may be collected from the stairwell at the bottom of their classrooms and taken to the Book Fair.

Any P-2 families that can’t make these times are welcome to attend the Book Fair after the Parade.

All other students and parents are invited to visit the Book Fair following the Book Parade from 3:00 pm onwards. EFTPOS preferred, but cash sales will be accepted.

We will do our best to meet demand on the day, but if demand exceeds supply, we will be taking orders to submit to Scholastic following the Book Fair. These orders will need to be fully prepaid at the Book Fair and will be sent home with your child once filled by Scholastic.

If you can’t make the Book Fair, the goodies on offer will also be available for order through the next issue of Scholastic Book Club or via the Scholastic website.

2025 NAPLAN Results
This week, parents of students in Year 3 and Year 5 received a report on their child’s performance in the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy tests, held in March this year.

As a school, we can use data from NAPLAN and other school-based assessments to reflect on and make decisions about student learning and to evaluate the effectiveness of our programs and interventions.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the NAPLAN results or anything related to your child’s schooling, you are most welcome to discuss your child’s NAPLAN results with their teacher.

Excursion Rebate

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government is contributing funding to our school in the amount of $30.00 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

Head of Junior School

Prep Waratah

Prep Waratah has started Term 3 with great enthusiasm!

We have commenced our new STEM unit, learning about community workers. We are exploring their roles and how they provide essential services.

In Week 1, visiting the Life Education Van was most informative about healthy living.

We were keen to participate in the Athletics Carnival and enjoyed taking part in a variety of action-packed sporting events.

This term is full of exciting learning opportunities! Prep Waratah embraces all aspects of school life, including Christian Studies with Mr Greig.

Sports

Sports Draw

The College Rugby Alumni Day saw past and current students and families come together to watch the Rugby action as U14, U15, U16 and First XV teams played some strong games in front of the gathered crowd.

Congratulations to the First XV, U16, and U15 teams for their wins on the day.

It was a great day out for everyone involved!

Thanks to our wonderful P&F and parent helpers for yet another delicious barbecue.

Director of Sport and Activities

Book Buzz

This week in our K-2 lessons, we read Darren McMullen and Craig Smith’s joyful picture book ‘The Wobbly Bike’ from the 2025 Children’s Book Council of Australia shortlist. We enjoyed sharing our stories of learning to ride bikes, scooters, skateboards and more!

Excitement is building for Book Week in Week 5. This year, the Junior Library is running two competitions. All students are encouraged to enter our colouring competition and to try and complete our Reading Passport. Entries for both competitions can be collected from Mrs Mackay. There are lots of lovely book prizes to be won, so don’t forget to enter!

Due to our Book Fair, there will be no regular Scholastic Book Club issue this term.

This week on the Senior School Campus, we have also been looking at books from the CBCA Shortlist in our Year 7 and 9 library lessons. Sharon Kernot’s verse novel ‘Birdy’ provided us with the opportunity to explore the impact of different narrative forms on storytelling. ‘Birdy’, along with all the books on the CBCA Shortlist, are available to borrow from the library now.

Book Week will be celebrated on the Senior campus in Week 6 after our Year 12 Trials have been completed. See the flyer in this week’s newsletter for information on how students can get involved.
