Raising funds for cancer research
Six Year 12 students from the College are laying their hair on the line to help raise much needed funds for research into blood cancer by participating in the World’s Greatest Shave on Thursday 27 March.
Students Cameron Bogle, Blake Leven, Henry Cornally, Wilson Cooney, Patrick Barnett and Jaiden Cogdell have been busy connecting community, friends and family and encouraging everyone to contribute where they can.Â
To incentivise giving they have convinced Head of College, Mr Richard Ford, to have his head shaved as well if they reach their group’s target of $5,000, which was surpassed early Wednesday morning.
‘It is incredibly pleasing to see this student-led fundraising initiative in action, particularly as it supports a form of cancer which sadly impacts thousands of families across Australia including in our own community,’ says Mr Ford.
‘These young men have shown a great desire to live out our College value of compassion and have done a great job learning about the impact of blood cancers then rallying their peers in support of this cause,’ says Mr Ford.Â
Students first took their proposal to the College Chaplain Mr Dan Odell, discussing with him their desire to raise awareness of leukaemia and raise funds that would have a positive impact on their community.
‘What stood out for us with the Leukaemia Foundation is that a lot of young people suffer from leukaemia and most people in our community know someone who has suffered from cancer and we wanted to show our support for them,’ says Year 12 student and College Vice Captain Patrick Barnett.
An initiative of the Leukaemia Foundation (Australia), the World’s Greatest Shave 2025 has to-date seen 9,454 people sign up to have their head shaved with funds raised for this year’s event now close to $6 million AUD.
